Hey folks,I am travelling to Orlando at the end of July for two weeks, also im renting a car, however to get a sat nav included with the car rental deal it is around 120 euro to just rent a sat nav for the two weeks.

Now my question is,can you suggest any alternatives? would it be cheaper to buy one in the airport there? would the google maps on my Irish phone work in Orlando? if so would I need to have roaming enabled?

Any suggestions or advice would be brilliant guys :o

Google maps should work, or buy a specific navigation APP. I use CoPilot on my IPAD.

Don't use roaming data in the US, it will cost you more than the hire cost. Head to a Walmart or a big electronics store, you should be able to buy one for around 50 dollars

Tomtom and CoPilot work well for the US.

Other option would be to pickup a local SIM when you get there and use google navigation.

If you already own a sat nav just download us maps to it before you go. It will cost about €30 to €40 depending on brand/model

Perhaps an ignorant question here, excuse my stupidity, but can you use your phone as a sat nav without being on mobile data/wifi? If so, is it an app to download or do you need to buy a program? Thanks and sorry if its a stupid question.

I was in Orlando a few years ago and one Irish women in our house told us, her sat nav that she paid extra for was sitting in the safe as it was useless. The roads unlike Ireland are all really well sign posted. Unless you plan on going into the depths of the Everglades I wouldnt bother.

You can always google map things in the hotel before you leave

Agree, the signposting is way ahead of here, go as far as to say idiot proof, I did find the sat nav helpful after dark though

Getting an offline navigation app for your phone is best.

Download the Google maps offline for the areas you'll be in and you won't need to use sign posts.

Brought one with me two years ago, found it invaluable If you are planning on doing a lot of driving! Couple we went with got one over there(about $50) and returned it to the shop before they flew home and got their money back!
But for peace of mind,I would get one.

Yes you need a data connection to download and use a map/navigation app. If you have a section of the map saved or recently viewed, you cache on the phone may store it for a while, but if you try to zoom in or out or move the map, it will need a data connection to get the new info.
If you have Android, Google Maps App may already come installed. It can be used as a map and as a navigation device. I'm sure there are other apps if you search the Play App store. I presume it's something similar on the iPhones App store.
