I am due to start a new job in a couple of weeks. It will be in a child protection long term team. This will be my first post in the area of child protection. Does anyone have any advice on what would be particularly helpful to read up on before starting/ what the caseloads are generally like on these teams?

This is third hand info from my mother-in-law who is retired from a similar role, in the UK, and now works for part-time. Be emotionally prepared for some pretty harrowing cases. I like to think I'm pretty detached, I've reviewed some pretty disturbing criminal cases, but this is almost always in the abstract.

How she dealt with what she did on a day to day basis is well beyond me and you have my sincere admiration for doing a job that is completely undervalued by society.

I take it you are due to take up a post in HSE. Did you come off a panel or are you working for an agency?

The Fullcareorder blog will give you an idea of what the work ins like in R.O.I.. The Community care magazine website is also worth reading.

Like any other job there are good days and bad days. Good. Luck
