N3 Inbound to Auburn Avenue

Hi all. It's not an area I'm 100% familiar with, but I found myself trying to get from Dunboyne to Islandbridge the other evening and got a bit lost. I came in on the N3 and through the M50 junction alright, and intended turning right up Auburn Avenue and into the Phoenix Park. However, while I wasn't looking someone seems to have removed the Auburn roundabout and stuck in a set of traffic lights - but with the right turn prohibited. Apart from turning left and doing a three-point turn, how are you supposed to get from the N3 to the Castleknock gate? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Google Maps suggests you're not meant to be able to do this, forcinhg you to go as far as the Halfway House then double back. Probably a good idea to discourage rat running.

Don't think you have to go as far as the HW House, theres a new bridge beside the railway station about 400 metres down the road that you can cross over and back, then turn left into Auburn.

Probably quicker than turning left and doing the 3 point turn as you'd doubtless be in a queue at a part of the junction thats not favoured by the light sequence.

Drive straight up to the Ashtown roundabout (Halfway House on your left) and take a right, it brings you to the Ashtown gates for the Phoenix Park, take a right when you get in the gates and follow the road around and it will bring you to the roundabout on Chesterfield Avenue.

Right, thanks both. I take Bandicoot's point about rat-running and would not be in favour of turning a child-friendly housing estate into a traffic hazard, but I'd always regarded Auburn Ave as a major thoroughfare. The new station bridge seems a reasonable alternative, though why they couldn't have left things as they were puzzles me. Another alternative, I suppose, would be to go to the next r'abt and go in the Ashtown gate. Progress!

    Sorry, hadn't seen January's post.

There is a handier way from Dunboyne via the back roads of Dunboyne or taking a right at the Mcdonalds Pub in Clonee and then right onto the Lucan road. Then left after the railway bridge across the canal and Barberstown level crossing and then Left. Luttrelstown castle will be on your right and keep going straight until you get to the junction just pass Castleknock College and then right down the hill into Chapelizod. At that junction you also have the option to take a left into Castleknock Village and then right at Mayos pub and the into the park. At peak times it could be busy.

as you come off the m50 roundabout theres a little slip road down to the left. this brings you out facing the side entrance to travellodge. you can then turn right and travel straight through the n3/auburn junction and straight up auburn avenue

You have to come from Blanch or off the M50 Southbound to use that slip-road. The Blanch By-pass takes you up the ramp and straight onto the Navan road where the OP landed up. Going through Blanch is another option for the OP and take a right at the Bell pub.

You can take the exit for Castleknock/Blanchardstown Hospital off the N3, you then come to a set of lights, turn left, this brings you on to the old N3. Then go straight through the roundabout and on the other side, merge left immediately (watch, it is very easy to miss!). This will bring you on to Dunsink Lane allowing you to cross over the N3 and on to Auburn Avenue

As per other posters, I wouldn't go this route as there are quicker ways

I'd have gone into Clonee village then take a right into Ongar and follow the main Ongar road to the large roundabout signposted for the SC.

Once here take the 3rd exit then first exit at the next roundabout onto Clonsilla Road (You'll see a Eurospar on your right) and straight on to a traffic lights beside a green area, take a right turn onto Coolmine Road. Cross over the level crossing, second exit at the roundabout then the first exit at the roundabout at the Carpenter pub.

From here take a right at the next lights and this road takes you to Castleknock College;a right turn here then takes you to Chapelizod and Islandbridge.
