I have a friend who is living abroad right now and has asked me to keep an eye out for something nice for when he comes home.

Initially I had put a nice E30 in his head but now he's talking of something more expensive - but probably still fun to drive - I suggested maybe an old 911 (70's or early 80's). Knowing him he's going to want something which he could make a few quid on if he sold it in the future or at the very elast not lose a lot of money on. Vintage tax is also a plus or something which will be there soon.

Whats out there that might suit him?

I'm not sure I'll have to ask him next time I speak with him. Lets say up to 10k for the moment as I know he's selling his current daily and might put the money from it towards a classic.

    You won't get a decent 911 for 10k...

reasonable, budget and 911 don't belong in the same sentence..........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I better put that out of his head then before he gets his hopes up :P

What sort of money would you be talking and what else is there out there?

I'd double the budget for a good one.

He'll need another daily if he's to avail of classic insurance on whatever he buys.

    How about a BMW 635?

Some BMC\BL marques were given rust protection of sorts by later owners, and sometimes the claims in publicity of the time, of rust protection, might prove right. A Hillman Avenger appeared to have had genuine zinc protection, or had better metal. A Mini of the late seventies could rust ferociously, as could other BL cars, but for random reasons, or careful owners who provide rust protection after the fact, a Mini, Morris Minor, Austin 1100 or 1300, BMC Farina (Morris Oxford, Wolseley 16/60 Austin Cambridge), even a TR7 can be solid cars. Toyotas went from being some of the worst rusters to being usually excellent by c. 1984. A British car can be good, or it can be problematic, although most non rust issues were caused by people not taking care of fluid levels. You could find a good British car.

Probably the most reliable bet might be any car of the early eighties where the rust protection wasn't blundered, which often happened. A 1983 Toyota Carina, or Crown, or maybe a Nissan Laurel, or the smaller Bluebird, might be an idea.

But how can you go from a 911 to a bluebird in one or two posts?

You can if you're incredibly boring.

I doubt he will go with anything other than something a little sporty so keep the comments going.

I'll suggest a 635 to him, gorgeous cars!

Don't seem to be selling well though.. He'd have enough change from 10 to buy a Porsche 944 too.
