Or so the TV ads lead you to believe.

Just rang Eircom to upgrade to 50mb E-Fibre for free.

Eircom Lady takes my account details off me and asks me to confirm where Im located.
I reply by saying my address and Dublin.

Eircom Lady then tells me..."Sorry sir E-Fibre wont be available till this October"

I ask her whats the point of missleading people with the TV ads saying its here,if its not available and its clearly NOT HERE..

She replies....."Ah its just Eircoms way of marketing it".

I said to her to forget it,as Im not interested in being duped by them with false ads and waiting 4 months to upgrade.:(

Is Sky unlimited broadband like this aswell (they use Eircom exchanges and lines??).

Or is Sky unlimited broadband actually available now???

Yes Sky Broadband is available now but it's nowhere as fast as UPC or eircom's e-fibre ****e. Basically you'll be switching from eircom to eircom.

Why the hell is this in After Hours?

They've less coverage than Eircom, you mad man. They also seem to be in large towns and newly-constructed housing estates. My housing estate is about 40 years old and UPC would have to hang their cables from roof to roof, but there's gaps between houses that can be more than 15 feet, so it looks ugly.

Also, some people object to having UPC cables on their property, all it takes is one cúnt to object and the whole estate doesn't get broadband.

Suppose Im a little annoyed at Eircoms TV ad saying "its here",and yet the service isnt even available in Dublin.:(

They stole 5 minutes of my life.......between the TV ad and the phone call.

Why do people still trust eircom?

These are the same people that sold thousands of clueless people "superfast broadband and phone" for like €40. The broadband was 8Mb, there was a 10GB download limit and people were stuck with it for 12 months.

Sky's is available now, but it's still the ADSL2+ (max) using Eircom's lines. Say 20M if you're close to the exchange. Only Eircom is doing the 50M or 70M VDSL2 at the moment. There's more involved in providing it: they have to install more cabinets on the street, since you only get the high speed when the last bit of copper phone line is much shorter than the typical ADSL line.

All DSL in Ireland uses Eircom's phone line infrastructure. That will be true of any future Vodafone or Sky Fibre offering too. They put it in, they own it, and only reason Sky, Vodafone etc are allowed to resell it is because of competition laws. Just like all DSL suppliers in the the UK use BT lines. It's bad enough having Eircom and UPC digging up the streets as it is - it's disruptive and costs them a lot of money to do.

As for you folks out in the sticks ... digging trenches to run kilometers of fibre, just to serve a few isolated customers who want to pay €40 per month ... if it wasn't for the law, they'd be lucky to have a phone service, never mind broadband, and you can forget about 100M speeds for the foreseeable future. :o

Well the second the lady told me that,I lost all interest in it.

IMO the TV ads all false and just a pack of lies.

Atleast the phone call was free.

As has been said above, to get Efibre, you will need to have a cabinet on your road. What the map is telling you is the the actual exchange you are conected to is Efibre capable, not that it is available to the houses on your road.

So while Eircom are not actually lying, they are not telling the whole truth either.

Also a point to note is that Efibre is "up to 70mb" not guaranteed 70mb. I know of one person who has signed up and received Efibre who is only getting 50 mb as "that's all the line into his house is capable of".

As soon as my contract with Eircom is up I will be moving to UPC. I also signed up for an "up to 25mb" package but I only get 12mb. I was given the same excuse as above when I queried this

Be careful with Sky Broadband. It's not unlimited everywhere. Only in certain towns/cities.

    There's a limit of I think 30 or 40GB everywhere else.

I've had bad experience with them too. I ended up going to the Telecommunications Regulator to get sorted. They were certainly awful on that occasion, but ComReg sorted them out and I got my money back.

There's a very good thread over in the broadband forum (yes, there is one :p) in which a lot of boardsies have marked a lot of the new VDSL cabinets. Perhaps take a look there to see if there's any of the new cabinets installed near you.

Also, of course VDSL is not going to be instantaneously rolled out around the country, sure aren't they still rolling out 3Mb ADSL after all this time.

I hate eircom.. and their semi monopoly here.

Trying to get broadband but we have to activate line through eircom first .. (or digiweb, cept they're actually worse >.< ...) It's ridic that we HAVE to go through eircom and because of that they're allowed sign us up for 12 months! fcukers.
