So our one year old Renault Megane needed a good wash did all this and the water marks remained after I dried it , so decided to polish with Autoglym and the body work still feels rough , reading on the web they are talking about clay to remove the particles that have settled on the paint work , now the car gets very little use only 5K in 12 months so is on the drive most of the time , I wash regularly so cant understand how this has happened so soon , any suggestions or recommendations would be very welcome.

    Thanks
    B

Even if the car sits on the driveway all year it will pick up bonded contaminants that regular washing won't remove. Guessing tree sap is probably your biggest issue.

The car will still need claying to get rid of that roughness....and will continue to need it, although not as frequently as a car that does more mileage.

yep tree sap (oh how i hate cars with loads of tree sap)
metal particle from train tracks are another one
    bird poo also

If possible get the plastic from a cigarette box and use it to feel the paint for contamanation

...or just rub the palm of your hand across the paintwork
