Due to nature of my job I will have to move to UK next year for atleast one year, and now I am in Ireland for another 6-8 months and need to buy a car, was looking at cars sale site found few UK reg cars on sale in Ireland, with vrt around 400 Euro.
I was wondering, if I buy UK reg car and pays the vrt here, then next year I move to UK, would I have to pay UK duty again or UK duty which were paid already when car was originally registered in UK. or I just put up old registered number plates while I drive in UK, of-course I have to pay road tax and MOT done when I go to UK with car.
please share if anyone has idea or been through this.
    Many thanks in advance

I believe you can actually get your VRT back if you return it to the uk. Or at least a portion of it.

there is no duty on importing into the UK, just a small admin fee. You would get back some of your VRT as said.

However, if you can wait until you get ot the UK, you will get a cheaper, better car by buying there.

    Thanks guys,
I think best would be for time being buy a cheap Irish reg car and sell it when I leave Ireland and buy another one in UK when I move there. really dnt want to go into hassle of VRT/importing paperwork.

I'd go along with this plan :)

I understood that there is a deduction of €500 for any refund of VRT on export in any case.

It's a bit of a palaver importing the car, in all honesty. Not difficult, but you need to get all the paperwork in the right order. We imported our two cars into the UK last year.

It's particularly irksome getting the certificate of conformity (if car was not previously registered in the UK) and arranging insurance on the chassis number, and strictly speaking you can only use the car to drive to/from appointments necessary to get the car registered, e.g. the MoT, under that policy.

If the car was previously registered in the UK and imported into Ireland it usually goes back on to its old plates. If not a new reg. number is generated.

That is what I was going to suggest. Have a look at the Bangernomics thread, you buy something cheap, drive it for 6 to 8 months and sell it for nearly all of what you paid for it.

What's your budget? Small I assume with the VRT being €400. But you could buy a decent UK import which has already been VRT'd , mid size petrols are cheap as chips here now, and then export it and hopefully get some cash back.

Buy a dirtbox here and run it in to the ground. Buy something decent once you get to the UK and bring it back sans VRT a year plus later. ;)

Will you be doing much driving?

I'd buy something like a Mid/Late 90s LWB big petrol S-Class or 7 Series here and tax it for 6 months and then take it to the UK with me.
