Passport question

We are planning to go to the US in a few months but one of the kids passport's expires a month after we leave and 2 weeks after we get back. So the passport will be valid for the whole time we are there.

Did I read somewhere that it's best to have a passport with a least 6 months validity left? Having said that she's only 14 so hardly going to stay over there on her own!

Would immigration at Dublin airport have an issue with an about to expire passport?
