The use of any attractant in the hunting of deer in Ireland is forbidden by law.
However it is a good idea to give deer a salt supplement and now is the time to give it to them as does that have given birth will need it and stags needed for the development of antlers.
A study in America showed that putting out salt licks for deer increased the antlers size and health of calves.
On you tube you can find videos on the correct minerals needed for deer as its not the same as cows licks.

dont waste your time with the salt licks or mineral licks. waste of time. tried it no joy. they wouldn't go near it.

They loved the molasses that we used to help them locate the licks , we spilt some on a boulder close buy and they broke the capping off it trying to get at the molasses

i think i worded my post badly, i don't mean to attract the deer for hunting but to help them, i would like to put something back into the area not just take from it, i havn't got a good enough internet connection to get you tube unfortunatly, i'm thinking of digging a hole to mix salt in but would like to know how others have found this and do i just mix in molasses or whats the best method

You can try the salt licks and i'll guarntee you they won't touch it. Me and TriggerPL bought a few not worth a dam and theres alot of deer in the area. They claim only a mature deer from age of 4 or more might give it a quick lick. Any animal which is given mollasis will have better hair but large amounts will drive them mad

We don't it over 4 months putting beside common used tracks , we covered in molasses to attract them they licked off all the molasses but never went back again for the licks , we used cattle licks a little research show me that they will go near them but not as much or often a proper made lick for deer !

They take years to embed properly into a deers natural habitat.Of course they wont go near them if they dont know what it is and if they dont need a mineral suppliment. As well as that it helps if you can put it within a reasonable distance of water.

i'm reading everything i can about them and most seem to find that it can take a few years for them to become used so i'm thinking long term here and not expecting them to have any effect this season, the guy who started this original thread was talking about an article in irish shooters digest, i looked at it but didn't take much notice cos i wasn't interested in deer at the time, what i can remember ( i think) was that they used some apple flavered salt from america and put it in holes in old tree stumps, has anyone tried this way?
