I've a FRIEND (not me right - I don't have kids so don't own a people carrier) - her Opel Zafira won't start without revving, there's a new battery in it, so that's not the issue - any idea what could cause this????

Do you mean it revs up all by itself when started? Or that you have to rev it above idle to keep it running once it fires?

when it's turned on, the engine comes on, but it cuts out unless it's revved..........she's been told it's the automatic choke? sound familiar?

Clean the throttle body and check air filter.

Does it only do it if the engine is cold?
If she was driving the car for a while, stopped the engine and started it 5 minutes later would it do it?

This is where I'd start too, and clean MAF.

As mentioned before, air filter and throttle body are good starting points. My uncles Zafira had easily the filthiest throttle body I ever cleaned. But ran like new after. What engine is it?
