Just looking for a bit of info. I recently bought a second hand car. It is NCT'd till next year and was standstill November.

Upon buying the car the guy I bought it off filled out the New owner form at put it and the tax disc into an envelope to be sent off.

I received the New registration documentation but no tax disc has arrived and not sure what to do

Did you pay for a tax disc? If you didn't, they're not going to send you one for free.

If you're now registered as the owner, go here, retrieve your PIN and tax the car online.

Why did he post the tax disc!? That stays with the car.

I haven't paid for one as I'm unaware I have to. I bought a car that was NOT till 4/14 and tax to 11/13. Do I now need To go and pay the guts of €400 to tax the car even though the previous owner had it taxed till November

If the car was off the road, I'd say the disc was useless anyway.

    When did the tax expire?

You could try ringing Shannon and tell them some gobsh.. ..body posted in your tax disc by mistake.

I wonder can you apply for a new tax disc saying the old one as mislaid. As already said, the tax disc should have stayed with the car.

Why did you let him put the tax disc in with the form? (Never bought a secondhand car before? or checked the procedure on the forum itself?)

Don't expect you['d have any chance of getting that back...2 completely different departments so it should have never been sent off with a change of ownership form..

Maybe you can get a replacement disc claiming it was stolen??
Check with your local motor tax office.

    that seller is some clown.....

yes, you can get a replacement tax disc for a few € fee ........we used to get them stolen all the time in the car rental business, tourists would take them to keep a souvenirs.

Maybe the owner thought he was going to get a rebate on his tax that way and also save on a stamp.

    Tax to 11/13.
That's five months of tax. Can the previous owner get a rebate for such a period?

If I was selling a car ('ve only ever sold one and that had less than three months on it), I'd throw the tax disc in as part of the sale. If it was a larger period/sum, I might tack it on to the price.

The seller prob thought he'd get tax back, which isn't the case during a sale.

no, you cant get a refund on road tax only if the car is scrapped or exported....

Re; tacking it onto the sale price of a car, well you could try but it never really works.....I'd not pay for it in a purchase.

Because person A bought the tax disc, will person B, now the registered owner of the car, be able to get the replacement disc?

He cant get a rebate full stop unless the car is being scrapped or is permanently leaving the state.

It would never be mentioned as an actual cost, just bundled into the price. A moot point as I've only once been able to afford to pay for more than three months. :o

I think someone linked to it above but here it is again:

    Replacing a lost tax disc
    It is possible to obtain replacement documents associated with motor tax. List of documents and the cost of their replacement is as follows;

    Document Replacement cost
    Tax disc €6

To obtain replacement documents, complete form RF134 (pdf) and have this form witnessed by a member of the Garda Siochana at a Garda station. Forward your completed form with the appropriate fee to your Motor Tax Office.

The moral of the story here is that as usual in this country the seller was an edgit.

Just be aware that you could still be fined by a Garda or Traffic Warden for failure to display a current valid tax disc in the car even though your car is legally taxed. So best to avoid parking in public streets or metered areas until you get the replacement disc.

I'd put money on the previous owner thinking that returning the tax disc was similar to when some insurance companies requested you to return the old insurance disc when selling a car.

Does any company ask you to do that now?

Don't know but some did before especially if it was mid policy.
