Checkpoint on N11

Anybody know what was going on at the Garda checkpoint on the N11 near Loughlinstown last night about 9pm.? At first I thought it was just the usual tax job but the inside lane and hard shoulder were blocked and it soon became obvious they weren't interested in tax. As I passed the checkpoint there was what appeared to be a cardboard box lying in the road with cones around it, first thought was explosives but then they wouldn't have been directing traffic so close to it nor standing so close themselves. Drugs dumped from a car maybe? I'm killed with curiosity ever since and there's nothing in the media.

Possibly a box of the breathalyser tubes I'd say.

Or maybe they were giving out free Garda Key Rings as part of a community relations program.

It is drink tests and the boxes hold the mouth units before and after tests. Odd way to test but they are efficient enough operations done in this manner plus the road is kept flowing throughout.

You're probably right. God bless my innocence, there's me thinking that for once they they'd managed to do something useful. I should have known better.

You don't think catching drink drivers is useful?

Well, I suppose you have a point. They have to operate to the constraints of their capabilities and standing in the middle of the road is probably as good as it gets.

I was wondering this myself, it seemed very dramatic and they only had one guy pulled over when I passed, despite there being a lot of traffic let through. I thought it was possibly some sort of tip off they'd got.

What puzzled me initially was that no attempt was made to assess drivers, that's what prompted me to start the thread, plus the fact there seemed to be a lot of Garda activity in the area. I can buy into the idea that the box was breathalysers but you'd think they'd be scrutinizing drivers. There was nobody stopped when I passed and traffic was moving well.
