Key Broken off in lock

In work early this morning so I went out the back to keep the noise down.

I was locking the back door and the key snapped off. Its an old fashioned lock, a lever type i think they're called.

What are the options here? Typically it was the only key and we'd been planning to get a copy made today.

Is there anything i can do myself to get the think out? Or will i just have to suck it up and "get a man in"?

Whats the going rate for a locksmith these days?

a good keycutter will cut you a new key from the broken pieces, but you need the broken bit out of the lock.

WD40 and a couple of pins on either side should pry it out. . Bring the 2 parts to a keycutter; they should be able to sort you out.

If the key can't be got out and the lock needs to be taken out and replaced is that expensive?

I was in a similar situation myself before. Ended up soaking the inside of the key hole with jam before it eventually just seemed to slide out. Might not work but it is certainly worth a try.

Is it the same lever type lock that's in your internal doors ?

If so, its a simple swap with a screwdriver. pick one that looks the same, but the door must open the same side.

If you google it there are various different easy ways shown on Youtube of getting the key out, although one I used (banging the lock), did end up breaking the lock itself...

Is this in a door with a key hole either side?
If so a small guage wire pushed through from the other side can push it out...
