Is there any power in them? What are they like compared to the mk5 1.9 105 bhp?

We have the mk5 a few years and we were thinking of changing .

They're grand. All you need for everyday driving, could do with a 6th gear for fuel consumption though.

Compared to the old 1.9TDI the 1.6 is smoother, quieter and more economical. It lacks a bit of low down torque compared to the 1.9 but for normal day to day driving they are fine.

@ George..Are there any reliability issues with the 1.6 tdi engine..?

Drove a 1.6 tdi Golf in france last year and found it great on fuel and plenty
of power for a 105 bhp....:)

I was on Holiday so I needed a reliable car for the week...:P

We haven't seen any major issues with them yet. The odd EGR valve is about it really.

Get one within manufacturer warranty if possible. Some electrical issues, nothing major, but €300 a pop out of warranty.

Heard about them especially on here be slated by some due to being gutless but I guess it's all down to what you expect really. It's a small enough turbo diesel, will be fine for everyday use and should be great on fuel.

Never going to win races or be quick at overtaking but then again you know that anyway. :)

I've one. It's grand, could do with a 6th gear but I got 60mpg today on a medium lenght n road journey with no so not complaining. I like it. Smooth, easy to park and not slow unless your going to mondello. Easily capable of 130kmh.Good AC and comfortable. Very refined in cabin from sound proofing, I get 45ish mpg in city driving without great effort.

One thing I didn't initially like was the accelerators design.

Been driving a 1.6 mark 6 rental for the last week. Nice smooth drive but could do with a bit more power. I'm sure you could get a remap up to 130 though. Averaging 53 mpg according to the clock although i have pushed it a little bit

I drove my mothers 1.6 tdi a3 for the week last week. Used to a 320d 177bhp and I found it reasonably nippy. Not going leave a trail of fire but still all you want.
