In some cases like your example, it's annoying.. But in other threads where it's not really needed, it's even more annoying when someone pipes up and asks the OP for their opinion.

It shouldn't be a rule and some people should realise that certain threads don't need it.

I think a much bigger problem is people starting threads and very few posts in said thread have any significant input whatsoever i.e. sarcasm, off-topic nonsense, ad hominem attacks, irrelevant references to Nazism...ad infinitum.
