Just sat watching a couple of birds in the garden, they look like thrushes but are much darker, but can still see a specked chest but only just. They've a dark beak and same size as a thrush.

Tried googling and looking in my books but can't see them, are they juveniles?

Just found a pic of female blackbird, could this been one, seem bigger than the males I have in the garden?

Juvenile Blackbird would be my guess based on your description.
