Any suggestions for a PC based on the Intel Core i7-4770K?

    1. What is your budget? [~€1000]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [General/Gaming]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [hard drive/graphics card]

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [No]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [soon]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? []

It needs to be quiet as possible.

A 4770k would eat up a lot of that budget. A 3570k would be a better value gaming processor at the moment. You would be looking at €500 for a 4770k, decent board and cpu cooler for overclocking alone. A similar 3570k combo would only be about €300 and have almost identical performance.

Need more info as well. What graphics card and hard drive do you have already?

Much better buy. 3570k overclocked will be very competitive in gaming for quite some time, more than enough. This allows you to get a very nice graphics card setup. SLI 660s, maybe 7950s if the driver "fix" at the end of July is actually a proper fix.

My current rig had a i5-750 until the Gigabyte motherboard died. I hadn't
planned on ungrading for another one or two years. I can reuse the 2TB
hdd, the 6950 (and also the memory?).

This is what I selected so far...

    Intel Core i7-4770K Box, LGA1150
FRACTAL DESIGN Define XL R2 Black Pearl
    Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB SATA 6Gb/s
    Seasonic G-650, 650 Watt, 80PLUS Gold
    Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H, ATX

Which of these coolers would your recommend?
Corsair Hydro Series H110 OR Noctua NH-D14 OR be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2

I think I'll stick with the 4770K rather than the 3570k, just to try to future proof the build as much as possible

There is no such thing as future proofing your pc. You would be better off with the 200 euro saving to use on an upgrade in future. You are paying €200 more for a processor that will net you 0 performance gains in gaming.

    It's a nice saving. I haven't ruled the 3570k out completely yet :)

Why would you rule it out? It is a gaming PC, right?

If you REALLY wanted to future proof you would buy an AMD 8 core; with octocore consoles it's certain new games will make use of more cores.

It's debatable how many they will use and exactly how the architecture of the new console cpus is.

I'd imagine it's similar to their current 8 core processors which are really 4 cores split to be able to handle 2 threads.

At least 2 of these cores/threads will be kept for the os and background programs so we might see some games utilising 6 threads soon. The per core performance of the intels is reasonably higher though so I don't think there would be much in it.

Games using less cores will of course do better on the intels which is pretty much 100% of the games currently on the market.
