Please note that this summer the Early Printed Books (EPB) Reading Room, and Manuscripts & Archives Library (M&ARL) Reading Room – and the services of both departments – will be unavailable for longer than the usual fortnight. Both areas are undergoing renovation work. Unfortunately, there will be unavoidable noise in the run-up to the closure.

The last day of opening will be Saturday 29 June; reopening after the August bank holiday. There will be no EPB or M&ARL Stack material available during this time (including EPB material in Santry). Any reference books in the reading rooms will be removed in May-June in advance of the work and not replaced until after the reopening in August.

Just out of interest, are there any provisions in place for or consideration of people who need either EPB or Manuscripts for things like Master's dissertations? That's quite a long closure period for those who have to do research over the summer, seeing as a lot of TCD history-type dissertations are due in late August, and the research period only really begins in late May after final essays etc.

Just to state, I'm not in any way criticizing as I know both departments are in need of work done, and I have no interest myself, apart from mere curiosity as a researcher (though thankfully not one who needs either department this summer).

I agree. A lot of postgraduates - taught masters students in particular - will be very stretched in getting their research done over the summer.

If you are directly affected by the closure I would advise talking to your GSU representative as soon as possible, so that some alternative arrangements can be put in place.
