Just wondering what the price of a pint and something to eat down the Curragh is. Might head down for the derby. Trying to see how much cash I'll need.

about a tenner for they typical burger chips & can, about 15 for a sit-down lunch. not sure what they'd charge for booze.

there are better race meetings though to go to though, the Curragh is very overated, and will be uncomfortably overcrowded on Derby day.

Can you pay at the door or do you need to buy tickets? Was looking at going down and having something to eat as well.

The Curragh is never uncomfortably overcrowded even on Derby Day.

The problem with the Curragh is that not enough people go racing!

Hi Lads, not sure if this is against the rules or whatever, apologies if it is.

I've 2 tickets for the Derby on Saturday but I can't go as I'm going to the Irish Open in Carton House that day (First World Problems eh?). Face Value of the tickets is 40 euro each, but i'll happily let them go to a racing fan for 30 quid each. Let me know if anyone is interested, i'm in Celbridge.

Again, apologies if this isn't allowed!

if the Irish Open is on the same weekend I'd say the Curragh will be half empty, stupid having both on together.

Exactly: even on Derby Day there is no crush anywhere. You can get food/drink, go to the parade ring, have a bet etc. in complete comfort. If the sun is shining, there is no better place in the world to be than The Curragh on Derby Day.

It's all the other race days at The Curragh that are the problem, especially early and late in the season. A few hundred people rattling around in a huge area with a cold wind blowing straight down the course and a coterie of bookies with no apparent interest in taking a bet.

Regarding OP's question: Pint or bottle of beer is €5 and you'll get a good hot dinner (meat, potatoes, gravy, veggies) for less than €15. Junk food (burger, chips, mineral) would be about €10.

I would definitely recommend Derby Day for an excursion, even if you're not very interested in horses/gambling. Definitely the best meeting of the year at The Curragh. Hopefully, winning bets will pay the expenses, otherwise it can get quite expensive!

Yeah, you can pay at the gate - €40 a pop. There will generally be people selling tickets outside for less than that, probably €30. A lot of free complimentary tickets are given out by the sponsors and some of these always find their way back to the course on the day. I have bought tickets outside the course on Derby Day several times without a problem.

Also, I should have mentioned in my previous post that there is a food "village" on the day where you can buy small "taster" meals for inflated (imo) prices. This is food for rich people who aren't very hungry. I buy my grub in the ordinary restaurant under the grandstand - this is where you get the €15 meal I referred to in my previous post.

why would you want to send a horse that needs cut in the ground off to run on the dirt?

Cheers for the replies. One more thing, whats the dress code? Better to wear jeans and a tshirt, or trousers and a shirt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,408 ✭✭✭ft9

    Def trousers and shirt.

irish racecourses don't really have a dress code as such

Yeah I didn't think they would. I just wanted to know what would look better. Thanks.

Jesus, you make it sound like the Derby is the best time to go to the Curragh. Little crowds/ ques, perfect

Yes, it is the best time to go. The Curragh racecourse is a large area and can hold a big crowd in comfort. It is more enjoyable to be there when there is a big crowd out for the craic than when there is a smaller, strictly-racing crowd. Obviously, rain can put a damper on things (if you think adjourning to a crowded bar is a problem) and you can certainly get a cold wind sometimes but everything is set fair for tomorrow - best racing day of the year imo!
