Jack Lynch Tunnel Traffic

    Hey guys,
What's the traffic through the tunnel like these days during peak hours?

Looking at the possibility of buying a house in Glounthaune but working out by Ballincollig - just wondering what type of commute times would I be looking at during peak times to and from during the school months etc.

Will the new flyovers make much of a difference? Or will everything still get clogged up the the Dunkettle regardless?

The traffic from glounthaune through the tunnel in the mornings was never too bad, even in the boom. Coming home you might hit some delays, but 15 mins would be a long time.

The journey is being killed at the moment by the work on the flyovers, but when done and the freeflow in Dunkettle is finished I'd say a 15/20 min commute will be perfectly feasible.

Glounthaune is a lovely place by the way, you won't go far wrong!

Congestion going towards the tunnel from the South has declined quite a lot from the height of the boom. 10 minutes is about as bad as it get's these days and that's mostly on Fridays around 5PM.

Long term the Dunkettle Interchange is to be made completely free flow which will remove all bottle necks between Glounthaune and Ballincollig.

As maidhc has said, Glounthaune is a really nice place to live. Fitzy's shop in Glounthaune also has an excellent deli counter :D

Thanks guys for the info. So would it be realistic to say that currently, before any free flow at the Dunkettle, we are talking about lets say a 35/40 min commute?

I know there is speculation of a toll being introduced on the tunnel if/when a free flow system is in place - what are your thoughts on this?

Glounthaune does seem very nice alright - pretty and quite etc.....

I work in mahon point and live in midleton and my commute rarely takes me more that 20-30 mins most days

You'd be looking at about 25 minutes each way. If traffic is low, 20 minutes would be very doable.

The notion of a toll is very controversial. A lot of people doubt they could do it simply because of what it would do to Cork City centre. There is also the problem that the Jack Lynch Tunnel was partly paid for using EU funding. Forcing people to pay a toll to use it is illegal.

If the new junction was tolled, then access to the tunnel would be obviously tolled.

There's an app with video on Android if you want to keep an eye on it yourself. Not sure about the other yokes.

Eating a breakfast plate as I type this! Frickin' delish.

Thanks guys - doesn't sound too bad so. My only fear is a toll on the freeflow system if/when it's built - but sure the way things are going that might never get off the ground.

I look forward to the deli counter in Fitzpatrick's!
