Obviously pre-recorded

I think Mat Cooper is the number one offender when it comes to pre recorded interviews.

Its a little gripe of mine that I think they used to get away with a few years ago but its becoming more and more obvious.

Today it was ridiculous on the Last Word, I tuned in just after the start of an interview with the head of Setanta Sports.

At first i thought it was an outside broadcast, the sound quality was so crap. Then the interview finished, ad break, back to the super quality studio setting.

Moncreif on Newstalk is another guilty one, his final interview of the day, normally, with some author, has to be a pre-rec. A week or two he got caught out when it obviously didnt play on time so he had to kind of repeat himself all over again.

I dont have an issue with pre recs, i realise that sometimes time constraints mean not everything can be live, but if if you're going to do it try to make it less obvious.

A pre-rec could be the difference between having the interview and not having the interview. Is it really the sound quality you're having the issue with here?

I listened to the interview in question and I think the OP is overreacting because there was very little wrong with the audio. If you know Cooper at all he is exceptionally pedantic about audio quality to the extent that during an interview if the phone line isn't near perfect he'll cut the interview short, I'm sure he'd apply the same philosophy to a pre rec which in this case wasn't necessary.

He said the interview was ore recorded so why try to hide it?

I think a lot of the time its passed off as live, you can tell as they often never to any texts during the piece and they're topped and tailed by ad breaks.

maybe my ear is a little more sensitive. Or maybe the average listener doesnt care about the audio quality.....

I disagree - Matt Cooper often has to pre-record interviews due to scheduling but he is always up-front about it, I don't see the issue. Sound quality isn't always the best during an OB, but I'd prefer a slightly fuzzy interview with someone that's rarely on the show than a pitch-perfect one with one of the usual blusterers (Franno...I'm looking at you...)

He played two recorded interviews with Austin Healy and Michael Owen last night also. He repeatedly said this prior to airing them and said the full interviews were available to podcast. If he could have gotten them on live I'm sure he would have, they were good interviews, insightful into both the lions tour and football. Why waste an opportunity to talk to these guys when you can record it earlier. Think he also said he has another prerecord with cyclist Sean Kelly coming up during the week. Watch out :-)

I don't mind the pre-records on Cooper's show as its always flagged.

However I hate the obviously pay-received interviews masquerading as a proper interview.

Eg: yesterday. An 8 minute Setanta Sports "interview". If this is supposed to be 'current affairs' dont bother, just roll your normal ad packages.

I would rather a-hundred-fold listen to a pre-recorded Matt Copper than a live Mary Wilson

You've not exactly stumbled on Watergate here OP, Cooper usually says straight out when a segment has been recorded in advance.

    Incorrect.

He does mostly mention it, and when he doesnt its probably because nobody cares.

Its a valuable tool, youre not going to get live interviews with people who are in town for a PR tour, you get your interview window and tape it and thats it.

Also, it means he can steal a march on Drivetime by prerecording for current affairs, where the Govt chaps normally go to RTE for the live bits

He mentions it all the time maybe. Try listening to him next time.

No need to get narky about iot, my point is that if it is pre-recorded and the audience isnt told a lot of people wouldn't know.
