Hi all, I have a 2011 Grand CMax and desperately need a roof box, trouble is I don't have roof rails and am getting conflicting stories as to whether I can just buy roof bars to fit directly to roof without the need for rails. As it's the one with sliding doors I can kind if see why bars alone may not work but I want to be sure before I shell out €320 on the rails. Can anybody shed any light please? Thanks!

I helped fit a set of roof bars to an S-Max last week, and it looks like it's a similar set up on the Grand C-Max.

There is a strip of plastic on either side of the roof, which I've highlighted in this picture:
    259595.JPG

There should be 2 removeable bits of plastic as part of this strip. Either a large flat head screwdriver, or even a coin (actually used they key to remove these from the S-Max, but a coin would probably be easier) can be used to turn the plastic screw 90 degrees, then the plastic bits pop out.

Underneath there is another single screw in each. Remove this and there are special "Feet" which screw in to the hole that's left. It's actually a very secure fitting as they are screwed in to the roof, in to mounting points that are there for roof bars.

You may need to purchase either the Ford parts, or one's from a known brand - probably won't be able to pick them up really cheap from the likes of Aldi or Lidl.

The ones I helped fit were Thule, and I've fitted Ford ones previously and both worked the same way. Wouldn't surprise me if the Ford ones were manufactured by Thule as they do make a lot of "official" parts.

http://www.thule.com/fitguide/default.aspx?language=en&market=ie gives you the Thule parts you need. Choose Make, Model, Year and roof type and it gives a choice of the actual bars you can choose, then lists the bits required to fit to the car. Rapid System 754 and Kit 1635 look to be specific to the Grand C-Max 2011.
