What do people here use to clean white handlebar tape on their bike? Any special products? I kind of fussy in keeping it as clean as I can.

    Thanks.

Soapy water works fine for me. If you want it to work really, really well, then wash a white painted wall with the same rag first. I was actually very surprised at how easy it was to maintain white bar tape.

I find a liberal application of black handlebar tape usually does the trick!

    :D

Failing that, Cif liquid on a jaycloth.

The first option does work best though.

Just tell people like Astramonti who ask if your handlebar tape was white originally, "no it was grey".

Baby wipes or furniture cleaner, only use a little liquid if the tape gets soggy it's trashed

I could change tape to black but it doesnt look as good IMO esp on the bike i have.

I tried baby wipes they got some of the dirt out but not as good as i wanted it. Going try cif tomorrow and if that fails i will order more tape down the line.

Put some Cif and some sugar/salt and scrub it for a while.

If that fails use some degreaser.

Wd40 works wonders. Spray a small amount on the tape area and wipe with a clean damp cloth.

Ok I take back all advice I have given about cleaning a white bar tape. I have failed. Lizardskins has defeated me.

    Tried soapy water
    Tried Cif
    Tried Gunk
    Tried WD40
    Even lemon..

nothing works. There is a gray shade in parts of the tape that it's not going away.

I feared this day will come eventually.

I notice you didn't try tippex...

Actually..... Tippex gives me an idea. Have you thought about trying that runner whitener that sports shops sell? Like white shoe polish for runners?

    This stuff...

I'd be careful about what you apply.

Dirty grippy tape is better than clean white tape of death. You don't want your hands slipping off on a descent.

Fizik tape is all you need, stays white. If it's cork, don't bother, much like my ex-wife, once it goes black it never goes back.

You will spend your days cleaning white handlebar tape. In the time it takes you could easily replace it with black. Tried it myself a few times and it never really works. At least mine never looks dirty now. Black is the future.

I dunno, I always kinda liked the "lived in" look.

Never had a problem cleaning Fizik bar tape. Could never clean Spesh tape. As for the cleaner if I do need to clean then it is whatever bike cleaning spray I happen to be using at that time. Not had a problem with them being too harsh for the tape.

Stay away from white cork tape and look for microtex bar tape like this from deda, I have it on my bike and just a wet cloth and it looks brand new. It on my bike for 3 months now, I'd say I've wiped it twice.

Black tape is the answer here. Don't think I've ever cleaned my tape....

    +1 on cif

Use it with hot water on a soft bristle brush and then rinse and wipe dry. Brings tape up like new!
