What about this car...

Im still on the market for a car for the missus and kids. Basically it will be a run around car for herself with probably one or two long(ish) motorway trips a month. But nothing crazy. And then the kids are starting to hit that age... so in the next year or two they'll be looking to get some practice in for the test etc.

    I was offered this:

    2011 Volkswagen Polo TL 1.2 M5F 60BHP 5DR

with 50K on the clock for 10K.

The car is absolutely spotless and the garage is going to look after me with a decent warranty since they sold it new and its only had 1 owner and its well serviced etc

Sorry thats a copy paste from motorcheck (which came up clean by the way).

Im not sure he has an add on his site. The car just arrived yesterday. I'll check now.

Sounds on the money for a dealer sale.

Just after checking. Nope its not up yet.

I was just wondering about that model of car (not necessarily this car). Are they generally good? Would it be the right car for the job? Im guessing at 1.2 she'll be handy on the juice and the tax so thats a big plus. Is it a hard car to maintain? etc.. (sorry Im not a car person at all)

I wouldn't be spending 10k on a car that's going to have learner drivers in it. A 2k polo would be just as good for them starting off, they'll wreck a 10k one...

Thanks for the advice. As learners they wont be driving without the mother. And soon as they pass the test, if they want to keep driving, they'll have to buy their own. So not too worried in that sense. Besides, the missus is the one buying this, shes gonna be the only driver for at least the next 2 and half years and in her words, doesnt want a banger :D

Price wise it all seems ok but it is a trend line which is pretty basic

All the more reason to have a newer higher NCAP rating, I'd prefer to see a wrecked car than offspring .

    Go for it op

Id disagree. I learned to drive in an brand new octavia. I was almost a year driving it. Done all my leasons test etc in it. I basically drove it all the time with my mother in the passenger seat. I never put a mark on it not even a scratch. At the end of the day you want a decent car to learn to drive in.

    Trendline - base spec model
    Comfortline - mid spec model
    Highline - top spec model

Its not that one. But that guy is actually a bit closer to home then the chap Im dealing with. Hmmm might be worth paying him a visit. Thanks for that link :)

So what are peoples thoughts on this model of car? Does it have common faults? Is it reliable? Is there anything I should be asking or checking for? Or is it one of these "steer clear" cars.

BTW: Been a basic model is a plus more then anything. We are firm believers in keeping things simple :)

i couldn't part with 10k for something with fog blanks, hub caps and a row of empty switchgear on the dash. it should be a sin.

is that the same 1.2 3cyl that VW had in the previous polos?

i knows its not a performance car you are wanting to buy, but 0-60 in 16 seconds... that's poor by modern standards.

I'd prefer get a brand new Sandero if I wanted a basic car at that price.

Is that polo a 3 cylinder?

I never knew such a car existed. We just had a quick look on donedeal and the missus has taken a shine to the Dacia Sandero Signature

My first concern would be they dont seem to be very common. Im guessing that means we be getting fleeced for new parts or having to travel half away across country for mechanics because nobody knows anything about them? And are they generally a good/reliable car?

They appear to be a good reliable car going by reliability statistics from Europe. They've been one of the best selling brands in Germany and France. All the hardware underneath is Renault/Nissan and is well proven which means parts supply and availability is good.

And they are available with a 5 year warranty.

Dacia's market share in Germany is roughly 1.5% which by any reasonable standard means it is pretty far off being one of the best selling brands.

Those Sanderos look cheap and nasty to me. If I was in the market for a 10-11k small car I would be going secondhand for sure.
