Just had a conversation with a lad who's moving abroad for 6months to a year for work. taking his car with him. both tax and nct run out in 4 months time, but because he will be abroad he cant get them renewed? Its a real shame you cant get nct done at any time and have then 1 year or 2 years full nct on the car. Surely this would make things better for dealers selling cars. A car only having say 4 or 5 months left on it would put me off buying it. I suppose with the tax, you can now just declare it off the road for the months it wont be in this country??

He can tax it online and NCT it early. 6 months or 3 months depending on which nct it is.
NCTS can issue your certificate up to six months early for a first time NCT and three months early for subsequent NCT tests.

Tax it online and book the NCT online. The tax disc will be waiting for him when he gets home and once he can show the NCT booking he should be okay if stopped by the Gardai.

    S/he's dead right !

And you can NCT your car before it runs out -not sure how far in advance -ring the office & just try to bookin an appointment without raising a red flag with them. Then you'll /he'll be sorted.

it would be 3 months in this case to nct it. No good. It was just a pub conversation we had last night. Tax i suppose is no problem, but its the nct.

Does it need an NCT if it's going to be driven foreign?

From what research ive done before about driving/living in the EU, most EU countries allow you to drive your EU registered car with out registering it (Some countries allow you to register your car on the original plates so its on the visiting countries system), But it has to be tested (Nct/mot etc) and insured. A lot of European countries will insure a foreign reg car no problems. Tax doesnt seem to be much of an issue.

OP that's a problem I've been mentioning here few times (last time probably yesterday in other thread).

It's purely stupid you can't renew things earlier, but unfortunately you can't.

NCT assuming car is 6 years old or older can be renewed only 3 months ahead.
So if your man's NCT runs out in 4 months, and he is leaving now, then he won't be able to help it.
After this 4 months his car will become illegal and legally he would need to have it towed back to Ireland on towing truck to have it tested here. Which obviously is rather out of the question, so in other words - stupid NCT law makes him unable to take his car abroad for more than 4 months at the moment.

With tax he can tax it online I think up to 1 months before expiry date, but his disc will be send to his home address in Ireland. If he don't have anyone to forward his mail, then he won't get it.
However this shouldn't be a problem, as when he's driving abroad, he doesn't need Irish tax.

Third thing you mentioned is driving licence, which probably affects the most people.
Firstly it takes few weeks or months at the moment during which they keep you without document if you are exchanging, renewing, altering, etc your licence. So during that time any driving abroad is out of the question.
And secondly the same problem as with NCT.
Licence can be renewed only 3 months before expiry date.
So assume someone's licence expires in October this year. That person plans to go abroad for a year now.
He can't renew his licence at the moment, and it will expire in October, leaving that person unlicenced when abroad.
    Pure madness.

But OP his lad was driving abroad.
How can he keep driving abroad when his NCT expires?
He could be OK when stopped by garda and showing NCT booking, but NCT booking letter won't be any good for police in any other country.

    No they won't.
Stupid NCT law makes it impossible for some people to travel.
