Are they very strict with the 55x40x20 dimensions.

I've got a bag that fit the 55x40 criteria, but width wise its too big. My own bag is about 40x35x26. Are they very strict? Or do I have to buy a new bag.

Buy a new bag — you can get them quite cheap, and it's not worth the stress and the chance of being found out. Sometimes Ryanair don't seem to check measurements, sometimes they do. I recall reading somewhere that Ryanair staff get commission when they find oversized bags, so if they suspect you're "illegal" you might get jumped on.

Yes, they are quite strict about it.

It's up to you. you don't "have" to do anything & there is nothing "illegal" about taking a bag of your size on board. But if the staff measure your bag at the gate, and it is too wide, they will make you check it in, and pay the check in fee. They have a device at the gate that they use to measure bags. It has rigid sides, so there is no wiggle room. Your bag either fits into it it, or doesn't. If it doesn't, they will make you check it. There is no room for negotiation. It is how they make their money.

Passengers get measured on roughly about half of the flights that I have been on. The other half, the staff visually inspect the bags. I imagine if your bag is just barely over the limit, you'd be ok. But if it is several cm over the limit, you wouldn't. Ryanair staff do this for a living, every single day. They can probably tell what bags are and are not over the limits with their eyes closed.

Actually at Liverpool airport they get 50p per bag they catch. I know someone who used to work for service air there and they do get commission for every bag they catch. I also know from doing an interview for Ryanair before Ryanair staff get paid a basic salary and every little extra charge Ryanair makes the staff gets something for selling you it. They all have targets. Its a business at the end of the day and the staff are expected to perform.

When i flew out of liverpool in March they were even weighing the bags at the gate.

Is it a rigid edged bag/suitcase? or just a floppy backpack?

If floppy I'd just wear half the stuff through check in, and once on board go in the jax and change out and put the clothes back in the bag.
