Does it have to be a 2 litre petrol S80?

I've driven the 2 litre diesel and it's a bit meh, the 2.4 might be worth a look. With a diesel engine it's a cracking car.

There was a thread about that very same s80 during the week and then general consensus was they're a bit ****

I wouldn't buy an S80 with that engine tbh. 0-60 11.2 secs . 34mpg average not too bad, but to really enjoy the car I'd have 2.5T Petrol (197bhp, 30mpg) but higher tax. Or the 2.4D, the 174 bhp version 0-60 8.6 secs and 47mpg average.

The Beemer would be a more involving drive, but the S80 a more individual car and great build quality.

You need to take both on a long test drive and see.

Which is why I started looking at the 320. However, the performance of the car is not my primary concern and the S80 does look very clean and is within budget. The 320 also looks like a lovely car.

You could covert a 2.5T S80 to LPG, especially since you're located in Dublin.

Higher tax, but you'd save that in fuel costs and more, and have a great car.

I'd imagine it depends on the OP's priorities. If it's to have a comfy car with a great interior then go for it as long as he/she can put up with the rather gutless engine and poor fuel economy. Pace and speed isn't everyone's first priority.

I have only heard good things about the 2.0 diesel but if it were me buying I'd have the D5 but that's because I value speed and pace etc...:D

Normally I'd have a S80 over a 3-Series but in the above example I'd probably have neither! I'd look around for an S80 with the 2.5T engine OP. Saw an 2007 for sale at about €7k a while back. That €4k will buy plenty of years tax.

Fuel economy would probably be the same too more or less - mid 20's.

The interior of the S80 is exceptionally good. If you're prepared to sacrifice a bit there are also Monday 2.5s about. Same engine and chassis but might be cheaper although very rare.

The 2 litre diesel is actually a bit rattly in one. Looked at a lovely specced one in Sheehys in Carlow a few times last year and thought the engine ruined it. D5 most definitely, S60 is certainly a nice car with that motor.

I'd agree it's pushing for the best of a bad choice. And the petrol ED's have their own issues. If I had a gun to my head it would be the S80.

Op do you have to limit yourself to the above? If I recall the budgets about 10k,luxurious and small miles, yes?

I have an S60 D5, it's one of the older 163hp models, newer ones have 185hp. Averages, and I'm not joking here, 50mpg (60% motorway, 20% n-road, 20% urban). Plenty of poke, although the turbo kick is a bit slow coming compared to some cars I've driven.

New model? That's surprisingly good, I think it would be infinitely better than the 2 litre petrol. Usage would be the key nugget of info.

I quite like the s80 but looking at later ones a while back it was quite sickening to see the amount of 1.6d versions on sale.
I don't see what the attraction to the bland bmw would be either.

    No, old model.

If I was buying one of the new model (maybe next year- not new), I'd seriously consider the D5 again, probably have to go the UK for it though, all thats on sale here is 1.6 and 2.0 models.

Not limited to those cars per se, but they're two models that I have always liked. I'd be open to other suggestions, originally I was considering the Passat but if you have any other recommendations I'd be happy to hear.

Also, out of curiousity, there doesn't seem to be a general approval for either the S80 or the 320, the reasons for S80 seem clear but not sure why posters aren't keen on the 320?
