Work Contracts....the Devil is in the detail

Some advice for you folks out there...
So a few years ago I decided I needed a change in work, maybe something different.
Looked about and applied for a job with a multinational company, now I was well paid in my existing job and this one paid less but they said there was a good salary scale, if I did a good job and got good appraisals at the end of the year I could be back at existing pay or better within a short time.
This was clearly discussed at the interview stage and I told them it was very important that these increments get paid if I performed well...yes of course was the answer.
I done the maths and figured I could manage and it was a good secure job, so I accepted the job and signed the contract.

Then.....a few months in I hear that there was an existing pay freeze and no word from the company management if incremental payments will ever return.

Roll on a couple of years and still no pay increases which have left me in a very bad financial place.... :-(

Now this is where I give you the advice, READ your work contract very very carefully, because this crowd knew exactly what they we're doing when they wrote my contract, they mentioned salary reviews and all that but never specifically mentioned the agreed increases if I done a good job...feckers.
I got a legal person to look over it and they said that unfortunately the company shafted me, legally they done nothing wrong but morally they fcuked me over.

Advice, read your contract before you sign it,( read it like a contract is out on your life) make sure anything agreed is specifically written down to the finest detail and a clearly set out detail of how YOU not the employees progress through the pay scale.

Of course if anyone figures out who I work for....this post is allegedly and total fiction

You'll never have a contract that guarantees salary increases even in PS; it's always down to reviews...

What I mean is get the exact detail of how they are given in the contract, it will make any claim for it easier. Mine was worded too vaguely in retrospect....

My ( maternity) contract -with a public ally funded government unionised body -higher education -said " at any time for any reason or no reason, we can terminate your contract with a days notice". I was horrified & did not want to sign that -they refused to let me into the building until it was signed. Nightmare. And most of these people are on HUGE six figure salaries. Revolting.

Where is the law & employer protection In that.

    Total exploitation .

didnt some high profile bank execs have this detail in their contracts - guaranteed salary increases year on year ..... "performance related increases" - basically if they do their job they get an increase....of course, they could have been in such a position as to write their own contracts and get HR approve them before they sign and make it official and I doubt HR could/would question the directors of a bank.

anyway ... dont want to drag the thread further off topic .... but yes.... tread carefully with contracts, its quite often they are vague because they want to cover themselves legally in the event of a multitude of scenarios and they can't list them because they might let something out and this would create a loophole.

of course they could also be vague because the HR/legal team who drafted them may have just "borrowed" a template and copied/adjust to change company names/paste

I'd say that part of your contract cannot be enforced. They cannot ignore employment law in this area. Look it up, as we cannot give legal advice here.
shocking thing to put in a contract all the same

Any pay increases were linked to a certain level of performance in my company not length of service, pricks still won't pay

Did that refer to a period of work less than 1 year or your probation period?
