I have been summoned for jury service next Tuesday however yesterday I received a new job offer and my new employer requires me to start next Thursday as new recruits are receiving induction training. Is there any way of being excused from jury service? I plan to contact the court office first thing on Monday just looking for some advice.

    Thanks
    Aoife

loads of different ways ... you could know a defendant, you may know about the case, you may know the alleged victim, you may be racist/prejudiced against the accused or people similar to the accused, you may have previous criminal convictions, you may have previously served on a jury and are exempt from sitting for a period of time, you could have holidays planned and booked etc, etc etc ... this list goes on.

Tell them you think all suspects are guilty until proven innocent should work

Or just say you've just started a new job, think that should work. Being summoned for jury service isn't final...yet, but I would still check on that.

To the OP: Just be honest as to the reason why you don't think you can attend, like you've got a new job and would like to settle in the new job before being considered again i.e. you're scared of losing the job in this economic climate....hopefully that should work, or all of the above should work :pac:
