    Hi guys,

As a relative newbie, I'm looking at upgrading components on my felt z6 bit by bit. I'm looking at upgrading my cassette from a tiara to an ultegra, but need some advice on cassettes.
My tiagra group set is compact, and I was wondering would a ten speed ultegra 12 30 fit my chain set?
Also any advice on what the 6700 12 - 30 would have over the 6700 11- options. The 12-30 is a good bit more expensive, as they are both ten speed I assume that all the cogs on the 12-30 are just that bit easier than say a 11-25 for example, but I'm pretty clueless on this so any advice is welcome.
    Cheers
    Bibio

if you have a compact an 11-25 or 12-25 will be fine on the back.

and yes, all 10 speed shimano cassettes will be fine.

and replace your chain if you are replacing your cassette.

There's a chances that if you're currently running an 11-25, a 12-30 cassette will not work with your existing rear derealleur (i.e. you'd need a long cage RD). A 12-28 would be a better bet. You'd also need to change the chain.

My bike came with all ultegra except for a 105 11-28 cassette which I switch with a tiagra 12-30 if I'm going to be in the higher hills (now smcl knows how I got up Slieve Maan), TBH I see cassettes as consumables which wear out quickly enough so find it hard to justify spending the extra for the ultegra versions.

I see no difference in the shifting with the tiagra cassette.

I did a bit of research before fitting the 12-30 and whether the RD can cope seems to depend a lot on the individual model of bike and the geometry of the dropouts and dérailleur hanger, you'll have some adjustment with the b screw .

Medium cage Shimano derailleurs will take a 30t cassette with no problems.

I looked into upgrading cassette before from tiagra one. General concensus was there's no point. The tiagra will work just as well as the more expensive ultegra and the weight saving is minimal in the greater scheme of things. Tiagra cassette only 20 quid delivered on CRC at the moment. Save the money for good quality tires, best bang for the buck upgrade wise.

    Ultegra 6700 208g (11-23)
    -Alloy carrier
    -Alloy lockring
    -alloy spacers

    105 5700 245g (11-25)
    -Alloy carrier
    -Steel lockring
    -Plastic spacers

    Tiagra 4600 261g (11-25) 310g (12-28)
    -No carrier, rivetted steel
    -Steel lockring
    -Plastic spacers (i think)

there you go (wish i'd done this before my last cassette upgrade - would be difficult justifying 105 if those weights are right, i already had 105)

you get to tell people you have an ultegra cassette. That makes it worthwhile

    Who'd want an ultregra cassette!

50 gram of a weight difference in my mind is significant.
