Cats. Why the hate?

The cat has a got a hard time of it on AH over the years. Lots of extreme opinions about their evilness and maliciousness.

I witnessed a lovely scene this evening where a cat climbed up on the bed of a sick women, licked her face, put a paw on her neck and snuggled up beside her. It was a genuine bond between creature and owner.

I think anthropomorphism is a stupid concept. But why aren't cats appreciated on the same level as dogs? They both run up to humans. They both want food.

    Vile creatures.

I have nothing against cats, but they're as capricious as you can get. When compared to dogs they essentially have no loyalty whatsoever. Their bad rap probably stems from the loyalty issues.

Two stray cats found found on our farm. Most likely dumped by some owner

One died soon afterwards and the other got the best of care. Fed, visits to vet, slept inside, toys, even more food. Sure what more could we do?

    The cat seemed happy

And then one day it shacked up with the neighbours.
    Even got a new name!

Why the hate OP? No loyalty

Name me one nice animal that likes cats?

Dogs hate them, rabbits hate them, birds hate them, even educated fleas hate them. Liking cats is against the laws of nature.

Most animals of different species dislike each other but for what it's worth our dog and our cat were the best of friends.

Obviously one of them was a spy. Dogs like birds. Birds like elephants. Elephants like giraffes. No one likes cats. Cats suck.

I win the argument, there is no more to discuss.

Similar story in the excellent recent BBC cat programmes on horizon. One cat decided he'd had enough of his original home what with the noisy children and then the dog. When the dog arrived, he fecked off to a house 50m down the road which is now his home.

They tracked him to see where he went on his travels and he goes nowhere near the old house.:pac:

Thanks, I wanted to keep it simple, though I'm saddened that you find it wretched. Perhaps if it eluded to a long haired slender person it would be more to your taste. Since you explicitly state it's genuine I see that I was wrong and offer you my humble apologies.

Our dog killed a bird. Caught it mid-flight. I was equally horrified and impressed. Our dog may be the anomaly in this equation.

Yeah he's been brainwashed by the cat. Book him into a doggy psychiatrist for urgent deprogramming.

That was very interesting alright he lived with the original family for 10 years then moved across the street and hasnt gone back to the first house in 3 years. His first "owener" said she gets upset looking out the window and seeing him following the new owner around.

Do dogs not go into the next door neighbours garden and shít in it, of course they do as I have to deal with it most days, but it's no big deal just get a shovel and fook it back over the fence into his place.

Also dog dung can be just as lethal and harmful.

We used to always have a few cats around the place growing up and they were great rat catchers, used to leave the bodies outside the back door to show us their hard work.

    Cats are cool.

My little sister nearly had her eye bitten out at age 3 by an apparently lovely dog that had no history of such a thing. Luckily two teeth dug into just above the eye and one just below. All the blood, seeing my little sis have such huge swelling, it was a bit scaring as to my opinion of dogs. I've also had problems with dogs jumping on me and stopping me from going for jogs, at one stage I was getting stopped every time for a few weeks. Also I've had a great cat for the last 10 years that's been such a great pet and she's lovely so I'm definitely a cat fan.

Cats are only popular because they're extremely low maintenance.

They aren't good pets in terms of anything else. They just lie there and only show you 'affection' when they want something off you. Selfish creatures, really.

My friend was betting her neighbours cat who clawed her in the facd -got her eye -sliced her across the eyeball -she's lucky she didn't loose her sight . Deep red scar across it for long time -looked like she had a worm in her eye :( eeeugh

( ok now) faithless cat moved on

The funniest thing I've seen in a while on deh Internet is " cat shaming" on buzz feed. Can't link sorry ! It shows all the hilarious, glorious monsters & their wide eyed deeds in full explicit detail.

Cats have all the personality of a teaspoon. They offer false affection in the hope of getting fed. If they can find a better meal ticket elsewhere, they'll be off before you can say diddums. They are nothing but Whiskas whores.

Other than that, they're OK I suppose.

    Our cat loves belly rubs!

I don't know what kind of strange cats you guys have come into contact with but our cat is pretty cool.

He comes and goes via the cat flap and definitely knows where he lives.
He gives you a big thank you rub after dinner. He plays football with a little Ping pong ball. Snuggles up beside you.
He can knock on the hall door by jumping at the knocker.

I had the flu and he raided the fridge when herself wasn't looking and brought me down a freshly caught slice of cooked ham which he dropped on my face!
Not the nicest delivery but, it does show they're very nice pets and do actually have a bit of concern for your well being!
The only downside is that he is almost too loyal. if I go for a walk he'll follow me for 2km+

The reason I have an objection to free-roaming cats is this: the owners refuse to take responsibility for them.

They foul in other people's gardens, but you're supposed to be ok with it because they scratch some dirt over it. WTF like? Is it ok for me to let my dogs foul someone's garden if I kick some soil over it? They sit up on my back wall and drive my dogs nuts, and then the neighbours complain about the barking. Before I had the dogs cats took goldfish out of my pond. They kill native wildlife, something which some owners seem not to care about; some estimates put it at one kill per cat per month, it doesn't sound much until you realise that there are at least 700,000 cats in the country. The owners don't want to know though. They use the same 'oh, it'd be cruel to safely contain them on my own property' nonsense that people used to justify letting their dogs roam in the 80s.

I have no problem with cats, I quite like them. I would just prefer for people to keep their pets in their houses.

But with dogs you can tell your neighbour to keep their dog out of your garden. If you try it with a cat owner you'll get 'Oh, it's in their nature to roam. Sure they bury their poo so it's ok. I couldn't keep them in my garden because [I'm not bothered to put the effort in]'.

I've got 5 cats. only 1 belongs to me the other are kittens awaiting a new home.
I love cats there nice they can be even more affectionate then dogs, and more play full they also can be independent take care of rodant issues and generally a good animal to have around the house.

As long as you dont let them rule the place there fine you gotta be very heavy handed with them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭SpaceTime

The big difference with roaming dogs is that they're a physical threat to humans in the sense that they can and do attack people, chase cars, chase bikes etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Cats are for lazy pet owners, awful creatures; no loyalty, will do whatever suits themselves without regard for the owners. They generally just come and go for food and shelter and piss off whenever they want.

That's just total nonsense though and it's the kind of weird prejudice against an animal that causes them to be abused by some people.

They're social animals, but not social hunters. They live in colonies, have very complex social behaviour by any standards. They form very strong bonds with family or with humans they've been brought up with. They can communicate with each other or with humans using vocalisations, eye contact, tail signals and body language all of which shows how socially evolved they are.

They've also been living with humans for millenia and have evolved along side us much like dogs have

All this projecting of 'they're evil' onto cat behaviour is just ridiculous.

During a spell of superstitious nonsense in Europe in the middle ages people associated cats with witchcraft and millions were killed. The result of that was a huge explosion in the rodent population and possibly the rapid spread of the bubonic plague.

They've been a very important protector of our food supply and our health for millenia by keeping rodents at bay.

Let me start by saying I have both cats and a dog now. So a couple of observations on whats been said already:

Cats sh1t in neighbours gardens yes, but when I walk my dog the 300 meter walk it takes to get to the park he pisses all over a load of neighbours gates. I bet my life any dog does the same. So maybe the sh1tting in the gardens is down to the fact that they can climb. If dogs had the freedom cats had they would do the same, and not bury it.

Also, why are cat haters mentioning cats using owners for food? I cant eat a biscuit in my house without the dog staring me down! You cant eat your dinner in peace. Cats on the other hand barely eat, I just dont see the food issues.

And finally in relation to loyalty, I was woken during the night by my cat, who I have had for the last 8 years, walking around me in circles purring on my bed, head butting me every few seconds for a rub and then she comes under the covers for the heat and sleeps. That happens most nights. She is incredibly loyal and doesnt like strangers much. The same way a dog would be wary of strangers. So there is a huge bond there.

On the other hand, yes, cats do their own thing and couldnt give a crap what we tell them to do but I admire them for that, they are smarter than half of you lot from what I've read on this thread so far.
