Hi guys, just wondering if any of you have experienced tyre failure like this?

    and...

    It's on the wife's bike....tyre is a Continental 700x23 (Grand Prix I think??)

Initially I saw the damage and thought that something must have been scraping against the tyre but there isn't anything near it. On closer inspection the damage isn't a 'uniform' width right the way round, so it seems to be a defect and the tyre is just coming apart.

So, obviously I'm bringing it back to the shop, but before I do, I thought maybe someone else had a similar issue - maybe there's been a few instances of this?

    Thanks,
    Andy

What kinda mileage is on it?

wouldn't be huge miles on it....there aren't any real tell-tale signs of worn out thread area (all the little cuts etc). Looks fairly alright, I'd guess about 1000km or so (at the most).

Thread here about Continental tyres recently . I stopped using continental clinchers due to numerous side wall failures but still use their Tubulars.

:) Na, name predated it, but it could have been a good cause!

I had rubber chunks carved out of my Conti Grand Prix 24mm tyres at the weekend in Clare. I knew they were thinning but the tread wear indicators were still showing so I gave them one last run. Luckily the inner casing held (Poly X Breaker) and I only noticed at home and not from a ditch. The more expensive Grand Prix use Vectran which is supposed to be lighter but just as good?

Anyhow, I did notice on the sidewalls that I could see that diagonal stitching showing through, which was copper coloured on mine. The instructions for the tyres said, change after 3 years and/or if that sidewall stitching is showing regardless of mileage. I got 2 years and about 5000km out of mine if it helps and have replaced with the same brand and model.

(Also, TinyExplosions, I thought coloured tyres were a no-no? Maybe a rules enforcer sabotaged them?)

Pink ultremos on a pink bike are allowed -even Ramm has to admit that one ;)

Something similar happened with one of mine - It was caused by a small buckle on the rear wheel. It didn't look like it was hitting anything while I was off the bike spinning it, but as soon as I was on the saddle, it'd start rubbing against the frame. Might be worth getting her to ride closely in front of you and see if it's rubbing.
