I'm going to be in the market for a new car in 2014. Hopefully an automatic...
    My possible shopping list includes

    Golf 7 2.0 DTI DSG
    Audi A3 Saloon S Tronic
    Golf GTI DSG

    Used BMW 318 SE (2012 or 2013)

Are any of these models with automatic trans. likely to depreciate faster than a manual?

If anything, given they aren't run of the mill and have very decent automatic transmissions they might well be in more demand. However they are also going to cost more to purchase. You won't get all of the additional cost back but I wouldn't see it being a disaster for resale on any of them. Quite the opposite in fact.

Especially for those specific cars. The DSG in the golf would be an advantage for resale. Similarly, buyers of BMWs expect auto transmission in most cases (even boggo spec models)

They will be worth more than the manual versions in my opinion. Or at the very least, will sell quicker than the manual version.

You'll always sell an auto 520d quicker than a manual to use one example.

The new auto in the bmw 3 is 8, speed probably better than any manual, should depreciate less, but may not of course

I Have the 2013 Audi A3 Sportback S Tronic in the SE, it's just simply Fantastic,
I have been driving since 1988 and always had Automatic's and so has the wife,
at one time or another iv'e owned most types of car with the different variations on the auto transmission.
The last Golf i had was a 2008 DSG and it was very nice.
When i buy a new car i'm always thinking about re-selling it, so i try and go for the something i know will sell
Iv'e never lost out when selling on the cars because the automatic transmission,
in fact because they were never very common someone who needs one will often travel further and pay more for one.
They seem to be gaining more popularity now and thats a good sign,
I would say go for it, your choices are all nice cars with some of the best auto boxes around but for me it would be the Audi.

People rightly expect Autos in Diesels and manuals in performance petrols. Outside of this you might see resale values drop more.
DSG should in theory add value any petrols its in too, unless the buyer is scared off by the early reliability horrors of DSG (or SMG1/2 in BMWs).
