Rear wheel making ting-ting-ting-ting noise

    Hi,
I have been doing more training on my Giant Defy 2, which I have Shimano RS20 wheels on.
Recently the rear wheel makes a noise like ting-ting-ting-ting, like if you were lightly tapping the spokes as the wheel rotates. This happens in all gears, and there are no wears signs from the derailleur hitting them. I only hear this at lower speeds as the wind noise drowns it out, it is a light noise.
The wheel has gone a very tiny bit out of true, so I am worried that the spokes are stating to stretch/warp/loosen.
Does this sound like the case?
Is there a good Bike Shop in Galway that you would trust to true the wheel again?

I am an 18st guy so not sure if my weight is mere accellerating the wheel aging process.

Let me know if it sounds like anything to you.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

Is the end of the gear cable rubbing the spokes?
Check to see if any of the spokes are loose.
I'm far from an expert but the guys who know should be along any minute.

Out of true wheel plus tinging noise usually means a loose spoke or two.

This thread is just going around in circles.

Oh you can tell its friday alright.

The spokes don't feel loose, and the cables are not catching the spokes.

I had this issue with my old bike and got the same suggestion so that's why I bought this new one :) Jk.

If I lean more on the handlebars when out of saddle going uphill, it reduces the noise so that is why i think its weigh related.

Anyone recommend a Galway bike shop that they trust to true their wheels properly?

Also, keep the "helpful" responses coming.

To save changing the bike, just change the back wheel, here's a reasonable example of one that won't ting:

Not any chance the rear derailleur is glancing off the spokes? Does it happen in all gears, or just the lower one?

    Edit saw its all gears

Can happen that the spokes need more tension if weight induces the noise. I cycled a bike for a while that had noisy wheels - it was coming from where the spokes lace over each other. It went away with more spoke tension.

Martin Kearney should be able to solve the problem for you (whether it's spoke tension or something else). Contact details here:

Its spoke tension, usually hear it with new wheels or wheels that are require truing and a bit of TLC. Kind of a pinging noise.

    Unlike the wheel

    Thanks for the help.
No derailleur hitting the spokes, It happens in all 20 gears.
I think I'll drop in the wheel to get it checked.

    cheers.

Does it happen all the time or only when pedalling? Sounds on a bik are not always from where they appear to be.

    1. Loosen, grease and then tighten up the headset properly (not saying it isn't just saying, give it a chance).
    2. Check for anything on the spokes (magnet etc.) that may be misaligned/loose.
    3. Check the rim to see it is OK, unlikely but it can sometimes make a tinging noise right before it cracks.
    4. Check spokes individually to see they are connected at both ends and are roughly equivalent in strength.
    5. Could it be your BB or pedals (noise only when pedalling)
    6. Bring it to the nearest LBS (I don't know any in the city to recommend).
    7. As above, if its new wheels, its probably just them stretching out, bring them to get trued after awhile.

It sounds like a similar sound that was coming from my rear wheel, which is the stock wheel on the Defy 3.

The sound did not occur unless there was weight, i.e. me, on the bike. Also, it happened in all gears.

I brought it to the local bike shop, and the mechanic merely sprayed it with oil (think it was the hub), and this fixed the problem instantly.

I had recently cleaned the bike and lubed the drive train, but didn't oil any other part of the bike, so maybe that was the issue.

Don't know if this is the same problem on your bike, so I'm sorry for the long post. It just sounded similar to the issue with my bike. Best of luck with it.

I always find control-alt-delete works every time, do you have private health insurance.
