Buying a handbag for an 18th

I am looking to buy a handbag for my godchilds 18th, I would have a budget of up to €250. I am looking for something classic, but funky, ideally in a bright colour like pink/purple/blue. Just wondering what brands I should be looking at. I love the style of Mulberry, Mark Jacobs and Chloe, but they are just a *wee* bit outside my budget! Any suggestion of brands that would be in my price range?

You'd definitely get something for that price in Guess, Moschino and Juicy Couture. Some might find those a bit blingy or gaudy but I like the Love Moschino stuff particularly. Plus an 18 year old might prefer the more in your face/less neutral kind of stuff anyway! You'd also get something in Orla Kiely but I think that might be a bit old for her- I don't personally like most of her stuff but besides that it just seems a bit mumsy for an 18 year old I think.

The smaller Marc by Marc Jacobs bags should be within that budget.

Arnotts has a good selection of handbags in that price range.

+1 for Moschino, they have some really cute bags. Juicy Couture's leather bags are pretty nice too, just bypass all the pink fuzzy ones :p

I think Guess is a good bet for that age, although you could get a Mark Jacobs or Michael Kors for that price, lovely classic styles.
I'm assuming you've checked out the Brown Thomas sale, just started and lots of stuff half price apparently. Could grab a bargain :)

Ted Baker bags may be a good option, they have a mix of classic styles and more funky stuff.

I get my bags in Kildare Village. Radley is younger and Furla is more classic. Coach, Dkny, All Saints could also have something. It depends what style she likes.

Otherwise I think Fossil can be good for that age bracket.

And speaking of Net a Porter, http://www.theoutnet.com/ !

Might be a bit old for her, but this Tory Burch bag is gorgeous. Fab colour and the brand is really picking up here in Ireland http://www.theoutnet.com/product/390862

Thanks for all the great pointers, there are brands I would never have thought of. I normally like Guess, but can't see anything I like this season. I normally pick up a Guess bag when I'm in the States, they are about a third of the price they are here if you can hit on an outlet centre.

Any who, have seen a Fossil and a Michael Kors that I quite like. I really like the Tony Birch ones, I'd never heard of that make. I think this one would be ideal.

That one is fab, plain enough to go with a lot of things but bright enough that it's young and funky for her age. That colour is lovely. I really like it, must look into that brand more.

If you don't want to go for leather, I think Candy range from Furla is great. It is very summery though and might not work in winter.

Loads of brands within and under that budget. The ones I can think of namely Guess, Juicey Couture, Coach, Lipsy, couple of them in debenhams its has 'G' as the main label and floosie.

There are other shops that do great prices for bags that last very well be River Island ones they fantastic wear out of them. I've a few and they been put through the mill and back and still intact! I find those from awear are great for a while but the most I get is 6 months to a year but some have lasted great and you can get lovely bags in RI and Awear. Have you tried Zara or Brown Thomas?

They be low budget bags until you get to the lower budget ones from penneys and dunnes and those in between like from next, h and m. TKMAXX do good deals for bags.

There are loads of other shops that do fantastic bags within your budget. The kildare village be worth looking into for bags you be looking for.

Another one for Furla here. Bought a beautiful ocean blue slouched leather bag in their sale yesterday...for 72 euro down from 180 in kildare village. I also have a lovely tan radley satchel which I bought a few months back which comes in lots of bright colours, good quality and not outrageously expensive.

This is every girl's delight, and have an outlet in Dublin. See website for great colours, a great investment piece. These can also be embossed with initials etc

Don't know about cambridge satchels they're not everybody's cup of tea. :/

OP I think the pink bag you posted is a safe bet, and I personally really like it :D

Thanks again guys... Although I am slightly regretting starting this thread as there are about 20 bags that I want for myself now! Some of the Furla ones are gorgeous.

I talked to my god daughters mother and it turns out she saw this DKNY one herself and loved it

    http://www.themintcompany.com/en/261441-tote-bags-DKNY-heritage---vintage-leather.html

It's more 'grown up' than I would have gone for, but it's a real beauty and I saw it in BT's yesterday for €174 which seems pretty good value. So based on that, I think the Cambridge satchel might be a bit too funky for her. I also like this Fossil

    http://m.fossil.co.uk/mt/www.fossil.co.uk/en_GB/shop/marlow_satchel-zb5565p.html?Ntt=marlow&beginIndex=0&pageSize=60&pn=sr&cm_vc=2020&imagePath=ZB5565675

Which I think is a bit more age appropriate for an 18 year old. So I think I'll go for either the Fossil, the DKNY or the Tory Birch I posted earlier. I think any one of them would be lovely for her.

I love all three bags. DKNY bag is the most versatile color wise but it is a bit 'older'. But if she treats it right though she could still use it in ten years time. 18 years old me would go for Fossil bag and 35 years old me would go for DKNY (I love the look of Burch bag but I prefer a bit bigger bags).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭ncmc

I'm the exact same meeeeh! I love the DKNY (I'm 34) but I would have ruled it out as being too old for her, but it's such a classic, I think she could use it for years and years. Tbh, with postage and currency conversion, there's only about €30 difference between the Fossil and DKNY, so the label snob in me is saying go for the DKNY!

I'm 18 and I would go for the DKNY! :)

Nica is a great mid price range brand, definitely worth a look. They do classic shapes in tan but also in lots of other pretty colours and their linings and detailing are eye catching. My sister and I have a bit of an addiction to them, but we usually get them in TK Maxx so they're that little bit cheaper again :o Debenhams stock them at full price

EDIT: +1 for Kildare Village for designer bags. Bought a Furla bag there a few years ago, it's probably the most beautiful thing I've ever owned, totally worth the expense :o
