A Bra That Fits

I know there's a lot of confusion these days about getting the correct bra size, and I've just found a subreddit that deals with that very topic. I thought some of you gals might find it useful, and I'll add some links to helpful guides they have.

If any of you try out the self-measuring guide, I'd be interested to know how the results compare with the size you're currently wearing. Apparently I'm wearing a bra miles too small, but I swear it fits perfectly. It's so confusing!

How to put a bra on properly: http://brasandbodyimage.wordpress.com/2012/09/05/putting-your-bra-on-properly/

There's a bunch of other helpful links there too, but the main reason I started this thread was to see how self-measuring compares to shop measured for others!

I don't go on size at all only as a general guide. It varies from brand to brand and style to style.

I try on lots and lots when I am looking and then buy ones that don't ride up at the back, don't have either extra space or spillage at the cups. And it works!

edit: link how to put one on properly is good.

I would have put money on the fact that my bras fit correctly before reading those links. I've a new bra that fit perfectly until 30 minutes ago, when I tried the 'scoop and swoop' detailed in the third link. Now I know it's too big on the band and too small on the cup!

I usually did pull my breast tissue into the bra when I put it on, but I didn't notice that it was slipping back out a bit afterwards. Apparently that's a sign of a too-big band size, for instance, even though pulling at it, it feels fine.

Currently wearing a 30GG Freya Deco, /r/ABTF would put me at a 30H/HH (and most of my other properly fitting bras are a 30H). The particular style of bra that I'm wearing right now is known to run very big in the cup so it's pretty much an exact match.

You'd be surprised how many women get this wrong. It's so easy to find a bra that is the wrong size but can pass for the right one because there are lots of wrong ones and only one right one. The wrong size bra can look passable, it can look like it's holding your correctly but it could be very uncomfortable, it can wear out very quickly or it can make your boobs look fine but cause the breast tissue out of the bra under the arms making it look like arm fat (some people don't realise that's boob and should be in their bra). If the back size is too large and the cup size too small it can look passable for a little bit, but the back strap of the bra ends up taking a lot more weight than it is designed too so it stretches very quickly. So after a few wears it can start to ride up your back leaving you with saggy boobs.

A lot of people can think their bra is holding them fine because that is the best they have ever seen, a lot of people don't know they have been wearing the wrong bra size until they try on the right one.

You should sticky this thread. It took me years to find the right bra size. The trial and error method wouldn't work for me because I have an unusual size, large cup and small back. Most shops don't stock it. It wasn't till I found a lingerie shop that could measure correctly that I found the right size. I'm a 34 back but had previously been wearing 36/38. I had been wearing D/E cups when I'm actually a G. I had been measured a bunch of times prior to that and nobody ever came close. I didn't believe the shop attendant until I tried one on because it was such a big difference to what I had been wearing.

Finding the right bra had a huge effect on my life. I had posture problems all my life because of my boobs and wearing the wrong size made that a lot worse. I can now comfortably sit up straight without straining or pain because the bra helps with the weight. It was a huge confidence booster too.

I'm recommending you sticky this thread because it's so difficult to find this information on your own. Even expensive lingerie shops get it wrong. My sister went to a shop (I can't remember the name) in the city center somewhere to buy a bra for her wedding. They measured her and got her to try a bra on and they said it was perfect. She paid about €100 for it. It was waaay off and didn't hold her up right at all. The cup was too small and the back too big so the back strap would ride up her back leaving her with no support on the front. I was shocked that they would let her leave the shop with it. So even if you reach out to people that are supposed to be experts for help you can still end up with the wrong size.

I went to Bravissimo last year and they fit by eye, not by measuring tape; currently wearing a Freya 28ff and also bought a Bravissimo Masqurade bra in the same size which is fab. Found that bras and body image good too for tips on where to go.

I went to Debenhams this afternoon and tried on a few. It was absolute MAYHEM there though, so I gave up pretty quickly. I'm currently wearing a 34DD, and ABTF put me at 32G/GG. Not believing it, I tried on a 32 F and FF, and both still gave a tiny degree of overspill :o. The queues were so long that I didn't fancy waiting to try on more, so I'll go back tomorrow and try a 32G.

Honestly, I'm completely shocked though. Until Friday, I thought the 34DD fit me perfectly, but now I can see that it is looser than ideal and the cups are a little small when I 'scoop and swoop'.

I should add, I NEVER thought a 32 band would fit me, but it actually does quite comfortably.
