I've been to the local registry office to get my birth cert as I'm going back to college as a mature student in Septemberand need it for the grant. I've always known there were 2 versions of a birth cert, one is the long form and the other you can use for social welfare purposes. I had to get the long form one for this grant application and was charged €20 for it. Up until last year that used to cost €10  So what's the difference. It's going to be used by a government department so why isn't the social welfare version acceptable. I'm just really fůckin hacked off at the fact its cost €20 when surely the €1 version should have sufficed???

I have an English birth cert so Irish places will only ever accept the long version. Dunno why really.

I've always had the long version .. Never had a short version of my birth cert.

Even a short version of the birth cert doesn't even make sense..

OK, well then there's definitely a full birth cert and a "Specified Social Services" cert. Point is the same tho, why isn't the €1 "Specified Social Services" cert enough for for a VEC when applying for a grant. Instead having to pay €20 for a full cert. The whole point of getting the grant is because you're not financially able to support yourself in college, but here, put yourself to more financial hardship and spend €20 when a euro would probably do anyway.

Or you could just not lose or destroy your original copy. and you won't have to pay anything then :)

Not really an option when I've had to supply originals to every entity that's ever needed it. This is literally the first time I've ever been asked for a "copy".

I only have the short form, the only people who have accepted it was the UK passport office.

When and why did the short form come in ?

You should (have) sought the originals back. They have no right to keep them. They may request them, satisfy themselves that they are genuine and take copies etc... but you are entitled to have them returned to you.
