    hi ,

a guy down the road had a Toyota celica with a huge rear spoiler on the back of it , a celica is front wheel drive , is the spoiler just for show or does it give any performance gain ?????

    cheers

It depends. Is it a wing or a spoiler? Slight diff. Regardless, yes a wing/spoiler on a FWD car can and does have an effect at higher speeds. Twinned with a front that's also aerodynamically tuned it can balance the car out at speed.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

They are often fitted to FWD cars to improve the drag coeficient, keep the rear window clear (Espace comes to mind) or to look cool.

Unless it came from factory like that (and even then, sometimes also for show) then its pointless or may reduce traction. However some FWD cars with appropriately large wings use the downforce to increase pressure across the whole car. If you look at the TT or New Beetle, they use rear and require rear wings at high speeds, despite being FWD (or primarily FWD in the case of the TT).

Some enthusiasts can even out do the factory designs:

Some of those novelties are the additions to the rear end, which give the Beetle a better drag coefficient and improves fuel economy by 5 to 8 percent, as Ernie explains here. By adding "lower-rolling-resistance tires, low-friction engine oil, and use of a B5 biodiesel blend fuel," the Beetle's efficiency just keeps creeping up.

Not all celica's are fwd, they also come in a 4wd.

OP, watch some Best Motoring videos online. Will explain a lot about them. Such as at that era cars were proper cars, and celicas, type r integras etc were developed and tested and every part was functional!

Presumably he likes it, and it's not doing you any harm. How about a little live and let live? :)

Spoilers were a necessity at high speed in the original Audi TT

I remember when they recalled all the first cars to retrofit ESP and the lip spoiler after some high speed oversteer accidents in Germany. Funny really, considering how gingerly they're driven here.

The reason I have a spoiler as its the perfect height for women to hold on to down the back of the car park!

It's not always just it show, sometimes it had practical uses
