Mate of mine is a DJ.

He's DJing for free for his brother's 21st in the the local pub.

The set up is basically a table on the dance floor.

My mate ie a bit worried about his gear getting knocked over after he checked out the room.

He asked would there be bouncer or barman to help keep people away from the decks. It's a 21st so people will be getting pissed. Manager just groaned at him

Any suggestions on how to handle it? He has to do it but is worried about having to fork out to replace gear afterwards.

Yeah he was looking to set up in corner. Not perefct but a bit better.

Maybe it's me saying this as a non DJ working in an office but it's a potential health and safety nightmare.

Welcome to the world of the mobile DJ - here's a few tips....

set up away from the dance floor - wooden or solid floors equal vibrations. a corner would be best or against a wall with you facing the crowd, hoping that there is carpet on the floor.

make sure you are near the power sockets.

have no one put drinks on the table where your equipment is on.

speakers - keep them close to you or put them into corners as well and run your leads around the skirting boards. if you opt for the former, make sure to don't get feedback from your mic.

lights - either have them under your table shining upwards onto the ceiling or if you have a t-bar stand, hang them down onto the dancefloor and have the stand behind you

I would have thought the obvious answer is to put a light box or two in front of the table. It would be a pretty clear indication of the edge of the dance floor, even for the very inebriated. Any time I've seen "function" DJs who try to make themselves the focus of the dancefloor, they might have a marginally better chance of picking up a chick but it's at the cost of having to deal with every tosspot on the dancefloor all night because they have put themselves in the middle of it instead of outside.

Perhaps let the speakers on the ground rather then on the stands where they might get knocked.

Also as stated do not let any one place drinks on your table.

Also a clear path around the decks for people too walk around too speak too you is a must!otherwise people try too hang over the decks too shout at you with drinks in there hands!

I used to have this same problem all the time, but a friend of mine suggested that I got some sort of screen or barrier to create some distance between me and the packed dancefloors. After looking around for a while on various dj equipment websites I stumbled across these http://www.getinthemix.com/dj-lighting/equinox-foldable-dj-screen.htm. These are the perfect solution, to keep people back from your set up and they look awesome when used with some quality lighting effects shining behind :)
