Would you re-apply?

    Hi all,

I applied for and had an interview for a job back in April this year. The interview (I thought) went well and it was for a position completely different from what I'm used to but they stated that they were prepared to train someone from scratch; plus I really liked the sound of the job.

I was told I would hear from them one way or another within a week, but I never heard back from them (which I was quite surprised at as they are quite a big outfit) and so assumed after the week I was unsuccessful.

The same company has now advertised a similar position again (but based in a different region). If this were you, would you re-apply??

Yes even if it was the same job

Thanks guys, the ad doesn't state previous applicants needn't apply so I think I will, I wonder if they realise I've applied before, then it might give them an indication that I'm serious about it :)

Out of interest, should I mention the previous application and interview?

    PERSONALLY I wouldn't.

That's a tough one. I think that given that you did not get any communication after your previous interview, then you shouldn't akcnowledge it.

Had you received post-interview feedback which was positive, but explained that you didn't get the job for another reason, then I would suggest you mention it. It would be an opportunity to say why they had liked you.

If you want them job, then yes.

Only mention the previous application if they specifically ask.

Hi OP, I had a very similar situation to you recently, applied for a position that was not really related to my education/background, but again they said they were prepared to train me up. I attended a first interview, they told me that even though I lacked some skills that they required, they liked the look of me and asked me to turn up for an assessment day. Many positive emails followed the interview in addition, eg: 'we are very interested in you, you have good potential etc.'

Unfortunately, the assessment day did not go so well - for reasons which I won't go into now. Unlike your situation, I did receive a rejection, but it was the usual PFO style, very vague and quite cold and generic in the language they used, which was a huge contrast to how they had treated me in previous correspondence. Amazing how communication can change so much simply depending if they have a certain idea about you or not.

Anyway, back to your question. Well earlier this month I saw the same company advertising a very similar job to the one that I applied before. Like yourself, I thought that maybe if they saw I was persistent, this might win me points.

Unfortunately, this doesn't really have a happy ending, as within two days of applying I got the generic PFO back from them, not going into details. Oh well, I suppose the impression I left at the assessment day was key here.

So yes, I would definitely re-apply, what may stand to you is the fact you think you did well in the first interview. Just don't be too optimistic just in case.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

Well I have submitted my application. The only difference this time was that it was through an on-line application process, the last time I was referred/recommended to the interviewer by a mutual friend.

Ah well... we'll see what happens, maybe the old saying of "it's not what you know but who you know" might actually be the case here

I applied for a job and didn't hear back.

Applied for the same job 7 months later and got an interview. Then got a second interview, then didn't hear back.

Applied for the same job again 3 months later and got an interview. When I showed up for the interview I was told they remembered me and that they only really called me in to tell me I had gotten the job as soon as they recognised my name on my CV.

So there's a very good chance that re-application might actually be doing you good!
