If Im on the motorway Id usually have the music up fairly high, so when I enter the town I lower it so as not to treat pedestrians to a blast of foo fighters or RHCP!

Only do it on my road, so my tunes don't wake the neighbours... :P

I do that as well, also when I smell something unusual in the car. Probably something to do with concentration?!

Usually have the stereo/radio turned up pretty loud anyway but as someone said above, if I'm looking for somewhere in an unfamiliar area I turn it down- just less of a distraction

When coming into a built up area where there might be audible warnings I always turn down the radio - I maght also open windows. On the M-Way the windows will be closed and the music louder because there are fewer potential hazards.

Also turn the radio down when parking. Weather it be in the car park, parallel parking, or even my own empty driveway.

Must be just a concentration thing.

When your on the open road there is considerably more road noise so you need the stereo turned up to hear it. Around town your driving slower and so there is less noise and so you can turn it down.

I always mute the stereo when reversing into a parking spot. It's sorta habit and helps concentration.

It's concentration as well as habit I think. I was a passenger in my uncle's car before. Radio was turned off but as we pulled into a built up area he reached forward and tried to turn down the radio!

Again, a few mins later as he was negotiating some parallel parking, he tried to turn down the radio again. When I asked him why he was doing it as the radio was off he said he didn't have a clue what I was talking about and he hadn't touched the radio!!

I do the exact same with smells as well, no idea why...

I definitely find this. I have the radio at a certain level when Im driving which is not too loud, and when I get back and am pulling into the car park I end up turning it down as it is blasting the ears off me. There isnt much soundproofing in my car though which might have something to do with it!

Its certainly a concentration thing though. If I really need to concentrate on something, be it in the car or otherwise, I really dont like having music/radio distracting me.

    See garda - music down.
Pass them - music back up.

Passengers ask why? - Answer: less attention :v

Also when reversing out. So I can hear scratching, screaming, and beeping...
