Black out blinds -cheaper option?

Folks, I am renting a room and really need to darken it as I work nights. There is a roller blind on the window so I tried taping black bags but they wouldn't stick. Are there any other options? Thanks!

You can buy blackout lining in Hickeys/Home Focus that you can iron on/stick on/sew on to the inside of existing curtains or roller blinds.


Good way to make exiting curtains or a roller blind into blackout curtains or a blackout blind.

I used to work nights (shift work) and bought black out lining in Hickeys and one of those extendable curtain rods, that was like a tension rod so I can just snap it up and down as needed - wasn't a permanent fixture.

I just bought black out roller blinds in B&Q for 39.50, and find it great.
You might have to cut them down to size but much cheaper than going to a shop and getting them made to measure. Highly recommend them!

I bought 'gro-anywhere' portable blackout blinds for my childrens bedroom windows for during the Summer months... They are fantastic... you attach them to the window with 'suckers' and they provide total darkness... I bought them on ebay for about €30 and they will come with us when we move house this Summer... Best of luck!

Hiya,
Not a permanent solution but might give you a few decent nights sleep till you pick up something better.

I just have regular curtains in guest room and sis was complaining that room was too bright in the mornings , so I cut up a cardboard box to the right size and put it into recess - dark room and happy sis

When we used to go away I'd always bring my picnic rug (one with tinfoil on back) and hung it on the curtain rail. Worked a treat with kids. Mother Care looks like your best bet.

OP call Grays blinds in Finglas/ Glasnevin for a quote. That are unbelieveable cheap as everything is made to order in their own factory. I have brought back blinds that were tangled and missing weights( they were 15 years old) and they repaired they for €10.

They're black out blinds are whatever colour you want and keep out the light
