I am thinking of joining Cobh golf club and was wondering if anybody had any insight into the club. I have played there once before and enjoyed it. I'm living in Mallow but from what I hear on Mallow it has a huge membership nod getting out can be troublesome at times. Any info appreciated

I used to be a member at Mallow and still have many friends members there. The timesheet used to be a big problem but since they revised their booking system recently they seem to have resolved all of the old problems. I don't think there are any problems now getting a teetime that suits your needs. Not sure what the difference is in membership fees as this was the only reason that I relinquished my membership of Mallow a couple of years ago....at €924 per annum I thought there were better alternatives around. That being said if you are living in Mallow then maybe it makes sense.

if living in Mallow its a bit more of a drive to Cobh than i'd like to be doing for my golf. I'd actually rate Mallow as a better course than Cobh as well

Only played Cobh twice. 1st time last year and really enjoyed it. Played it a few weeks ago and didn't enjoy it that much. It's tough on the legs and the rough was brutal. Course was in good condition both times but don't think I could handle that walk week in week out.

Played Cobh last week and it's in great nick. It looks like a very hilly course, but there are I think 3 holes with tough hills, the rest are fine. Found the members and staff to be really nice and welcoming. I think they have an offer of 70e a month with no joining fee and that's a great deal IMO. Not sure what the timesheet is though but being a member's club I'd imagine the member's have decent rights. Overall, for the money, I think it's a very good course.

Haven't played Cobh, yet ! But heard that its a nice track, bit hilly, and needs a couple of years to mature.

Are you working in Cobh ? Or drive down there regularly ? Don't think I would drive an hour each way to the time & expense to my weekly game ?

Have you ruled out Mallow based on something you heard ? Have you played it or talked to members there ? Have you considered more local options within a 30mins of you eg Fermoy; Kanturk; Charleville; Mitchelstown.

Having said all that, its probably a bad time of the year now to join a place ? If you wait till end sept they will probably throw in the rest of 2013 for free !

My own club Blarney may be another option based on which side of mallow you are. Quick enough spin down.
Plus as membership is by monthly direct debit you can begin your membership at any stage of the year.
There has been about 8 members joined recently from Mallow club

Thanks for the advice and insights. In regards to mallow I suppose I am just going in word of mouth as opposed to calling up to the club. Might be no harm to pop my head in. Cobh wouldn't be putting me out majorly as I spend a bit of the week around the East Cork area. Blarney I never even considered. I haven't played there before and have only seen it from the car park and it first look bad. Whatever place I join it will be towards the end of the year no point in paying a years membership for 3 or 4 months golf

Some places might probably do an offer on membership from now til Jan 15. No harm in checking it out.

Haven't played Mallow but thought Cobh was nice enough the few times I did play it. Personally think you'd be off your head to use it as your home club, considering it is at least a 45 minute drive away excluding traffic! Although considering how far away you live, you might actually be entitled to distance membership, might be worth a try?

If I were you I would call into Mallow and talk to them and ask them about the timesheet issues, the opens look busy in the evenings but at the same time there doesn't seem to be any bother getting your name down!

I play Mallow and it is a lovely course, though can get a bit crowded at the weekends - cannot say about week day plays though.
