Whether to Upgrade or Not?

Hi all, just looking for peoples opinions. I am due an upgrade on my phone at the end of this month. Currently have a Samsung Galaxy S2 on billpay with emobile paying €40 a month for 200 texts, 200 minutes and 2gb of internet. I am in a dilema what to do. I want to get a better phone as the S2 is giving me some problems at the moment. However, I dont really want to keep this bill as it is not great value to be truthfully honest. Have a few options:

    1) Change from billpay to prepay (20 euro a month) and keep the S2.

    2) Change from billpay to prepay (20 euro a month) and buy a new phone, hopefully getting something for the S2 as a trade in.

    3) Keep the bill and simply upgrade to a new phone.

Number 2 is appealing to me at the moment but still unsure.

Also, I dont really know whether I want to upgrade to a better Samsung or and Iphone so looking for a bit of advice.

    Thank you.

Meteor do an amazing bill offer for €49.00 if you're willing to spend a little more and would get the value from it.

Free HTC One (that's what I chose, there are other options) It's €30 for the phone now.
Unlimited minutes to any network (including landlines)
    Unlimited texts to any network
    5GB of Data

I have the S2 also its a great phone even against the newest handsets. If your into rooting and adding a new rom it can breath new life into your existing handset. It strikes me you are paying a lot for 200 txts 200 mins and 2gb of data, Your prepay options look great compared to your current bill. Question I would have is are you using all the mins/txts and data? If not dont go for anything extra.

Saying all this I may change my mind next week and get a new flashy phone with a bigger screen, quad core and all that. Personally I still like my s2 and cant see a massively better handset at present to tempt me.

However if I had to I would be picking between the S4 and the HTC one, but there is some really interesting stuff coming out of China also.

The only way somebody can reliably tell you what to do is if you give us a detailed breakdown of your usage.

To be honest, I have no idea on rooting and how to do it etc. The S2 is giving me lots of problems at the moment so that is why I am anxious to change. Realistically the 200 texts is not enough. I use 300 online texts also through cabbage and I would be under a lot of pressure to keep under this. 200 minutes is ok. 2GB is not enough either. I often have to turn off my internet for the last 5-7 days of the month to make sure I dont go over the 2GB.

Never had an iPhone either and it is something I would like to change. Something appealing about them even though a lot of people say the Samsung Galaxys are better.

Probably just a grass is always greener type of thing. I've had an iPhone 3GS since they came out and I'm seriously considering getting a HTC One or a Chinese phone like a Jiayu G4 or G3S

As bidiots says change your plan is a given you will get far better value than what you are on. Its a case of whether you want to go with sim only, payg or billpay. It seems to me with your usage and the spend you will pick up a free/very cheap s4, HTC one or other phone on a billpay for less than you are currently paying with more minutes/texts and data than you currently have.

I would be interested to know the problems you are having with the s2 or are they too numerous to mention?

Had a look today at a few deals. They include:

    1) Emobile - Unlimited texts, unlimited minutes and unlimited data for €39 - however for this you need an eircom landline. otherwise it is €64 a month.

    2) Meteor - Unlimited texts, unlimited minutes and unlimited data for €50 a month.

    3) Three - 350 Flexi Units, Unlimited Data for €40 a month.

Sales Person telling me to get the three deal as he said the internet is much better than Emobile or Meteor. However, a lot of people have told me that 3 is terrible and stay away from them. Any thoughts?

By the way, I am able to get the S4 for €99 on these plans plus 80/90 for a trade in. Or should I try to sell the S2 separately?

Like I always say, if internet is important to you and you are entering a contract, you should get a sim for each network you are interested in and try it in your area first. It will be worth it in the long run.

How easy is this to do?

    The problems are endless.

Making phonecalls, people can't hear me correctly. I have to turn on loudspeaker.

Can't put songs from computer to the phone and it won't connect properly.

The touch is ****ed in it aswell.

Stalls so many times when I try to go into different parts of the phone

Just too many to write about. Anything you can imagine really.

Well you seem interested in three offers: you already have an emobile sim, you can order a free meteor sim here and a three sim here. Or you can go into their shops and pick them up.

I know you mentioned earlier you wouldn't be interested but flashing a new ROM could sort out a lot of those issues. Unless of course there are hardware issues. If you sell it privately it sounds like you have too many issues to stand over it.

    How much for them then?

Sorry if this has been asked already but have you upgraded to jellybean yet?
And how old is your S2 because as you probably know it has a two year manufacturers warranty.
I was having a lot of the problems you mentioned and when i upgraded to Jelly Bean it solved all of them.
Also my S2 is two years old next month and i was getting horizontal grey streaks across the screen so i brought it into fonemenders yesterday and its getting a new lcd today.
So if you are under the two years just drop it in and they will solve everything.

A decent S2 should get you 150 on donedeal, so it's worth putting a new Rom on it to see if it solves the issues you are having.

On the eMobile offer, do you have any relatives with an eircom landline? Just use their number while signing up.....

I'd say sticking stock Jellybean on it should fix any issues he has with it also....

Oh and OP - the emobile deal I'm on is PAYG - 30 a month, 350 mins calls, 350 texts, free landline calls, free emobile and meteor calls and 1gb data... No bill at all

All you do is download Samsung kies, install it,(which puts your phone drivers into your PC) then download the firmware from the sammy site and then point the .tar file (firmware) at the PDA section of the software which you should have already... (Think it's called Odin)

Did it a while ago for my friends mothers S2, she went from hating it to loving it!

If you need any help let me know and I'll do my best to chat you through it...

Here is a guide - just substitute the Malaysian one for Euro firmware...

Meteor also do a 30 day bill for about €25 per month: 200 texts, 200 mins, 1GB data and free calls and texts to meteor.

I know you said you struggle to stay under the mins and texts but if you know a lot of people on meteor you could be ok. I think you can also buy a data add on that could help.

Kies can be a dog on your PC, especially when using ODIN to upgrade f/w.

you gotta make sure it is not running on your PC/Laptop, as it phecks up ODIN.....

I think once you install it, you can safely uninstall it, and you will have the drivers.....

Also, you can install drivers for S2, without needing Kies at all, see this thread on XDA.....

[Driver][03.04.2013]SAMSUNG ♣USB Drivers♣ for Mobile Phones -LATEST VERSION-

ADB driver download also included separately.

    Hope this helps.
