M.Sc. projects run through the summer to the next academic year.

    In answer to the O.P:

No. My current car is a 2nd hand car I've had since 2009, only suffered its first unexpected mechanical failure last month.

What do you exactly mean by breakdown / mechanical failure?

There is a difference between being stock in the middle of nowhere as car fails to run for some reason, to f.e. having a ball-joint to fix as it got bit loose and makes very subtle knocking sound on bigger bumps.

If it's the first one, then answer for me is NO.
If it's the second one then answer is YES.

Out of the last 8 cars I've had, this hasn't happened.

I basically mean any mechanical failure whether that be breakdown or a shock going.
Thanks everyone this is really helping.

My last 5 cars have all been second hand; four had no issues, one had the clutch slave cylinder go in the first week and hasnt given any trouble since.

No 2nd hand car I've bought has broken down within 6 months. But I know of plenty of brand new cars breaking down within 6 months.

This isn't really a good place to find an average failure rate as most posters here have an above average knowledge of cars so are less likely to buy unreliable cars.

I have had 4 different cars in the last 2 years, and only one developed a problem outside of wear and tear, with the alternator. One was trouble free for 3 years and another had no break downs but some niggly little things went wrong.

Do you work for Renault OP? Buy a 132, or you have a 120% change to break down in the first 6 months!!

Thanks for that. Its actually the reason I came here. I need to be able to say the statistics are taken from a group of people where knowledge (or lack of) was not a contributory factor to the mechanical failure.

    The response is great everyone.
    Thanks so much.

ha ha no I don't work for anyone related to cars.
This is a project which will be an important part of an application process for a course.
