Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, said on Monday that he supports the proposed federal ban on abortion at 20 weeks because he has personally witnessed male fetuses with their hands “between their legs” pleasuring themselves at 15 weeks.

“There is no question in my mind that a baby at 20-weeks after conception can feel pain. The fact of the matter is, I argue with the chairman because I thought the date was far too late. We should be setting this at 15-weeks, 16-weeks,” said the former OB-GYN during the House Rules Committee debate on the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.”

“Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful,” he continued. “They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?”

The first time I saw this story in my Facebook feed, I thought it was from The Onion. What's ironic is that many social conservatives in the US believe that masturbation is sinful...well, unless you are a fetus, I guess.

in the video, he mentions 15 week old foetuses with their "hands between their legs" and then says they can feel pleasure. It seems like only rational to join the dots... what other pleasure was he referencing?

I read it differently, calling that masturbation seems a stretch. As said previously, seemingly pretty common behavior. I think the last sentence there is a fair enough point actually, not that I agree with his position at all.

Eh, but it's not observed that they are responding to stimuli at 15 weeks. At that early stage, it hasn't developed a fully formed nervous system yet.

This man - especially considering that he is an OB-GYN - deserves all of the derision he is receiving.

Babies generally grab fingers don't they, if you put your finger in the palm of a babies hand it will squeeze. I think it's a trust thing, I could be wrong on that bit. In any case we are programmed as babies to do this, so is not more likely that in the womb the baby with his hands between his legs is doing this, mistaking his own penis for a finger, rather than pleasuring himself.
