lads i know this will probably have been asked already,if it has apologies,if you could only have one rifle for stalking and foxing in this country what calibre would it be.I know it will be a personal choice for a lot of lads but lets say ammo has to be readily available and not overly expensive in your opinion.

    I've a 243win for this reason.

Lads were trying to tell me to get a 6.5x55 I decided not to as every where has 243 ammo.

I like the 270. I know it's way too much for foxes but most of my little hunting time is mostly after deer anyway. Also Norma do a 110grain vmax for it too. They make some mess when they hit a fox.

Are you going to suggest .303 johnkav? You'll definitely have to vote for something classic, no .17 CF please!

270 or 243, depends on the selection and cost of ammo.

I would agree only for I rarely see ammo available for the 7 08

I don't think you can say which is the best one calibre, all depends how many deer and foxes you shoot, if you shoot mainly foxes and just 1 or two deer a swift or .22-250 would do fine, if its 50/50 a .243 is great and if its a good few deer and only the odd fox a .270, 25-06, 6.5x55 or a 308 depending on the ground you stalk, and if you like to practice a lot at paper the .308 again, its really a personal choice to pick the best one that suits your needs

Fine line between the .243 and .308 for me. Like both calibers, use both equally, good ammo choice for both, and all readily available.

If pushed for a definite answer it'd have to be the .308, but again feck all in the difference other than the .308 has more uses for other (non hunting) related sports.
