Second hand car from dealership

What should I expect from a car dealership (branded) selling their own brand car, second hand,?

The reason is I bought one 3 months ago and recently it developed a fault with the water pump which in turn damaged the timing belt and drive pulley. Plus there are loads more in need of repair.

One such is front brake pads that are 70% worn(according to their own reporting) after I only put 8k miles on the clock since I bought it.

The car is 05. I'm out of watrenty by 3 weeks and 3k miles.

You should definitely expect some form of comeback on the water pump/timing belt issue. What are the garage saying on that front?

The brakes being 70% worn after 8k miles means they were probably 50% worn when you got the car, so that is well within normal wear and tear so I wouldn't be expecting anything there. Remember 70% worn means you still have 30% left!

How long of a warranty were you given? When you bought the car were you sold it on the basis of the timing belt and water pump having been changed in the recent past?

The warrenty was for 3 months or 5k miles. Now originally my job made me clock in the miles but not anymore hence the large mileage in a short time.

The overall bill for the repairs etc was €1400 however I could only get the important thing done first (Not that anything is any less important) just to get it back on the road. They have agreed to do the work for €900 but my whole issue is the need to spend that amount of money 3 months after I bought the car.

Now if I bought it from a private seller or one of those rent'a'cabin car sales places I know I haven't a leg to stand on but is it not reasonable to expect not to have to spend such an amount on repair when bought from a dealership?

There was no mention of the timing belt changed however they are saying that it was the flywheel on the water pump that caused the damage and that you have to replace the whole pump.

Gerry, you are on your own here, the garage have no obligation to sort you out. A waterpump can fail on any engine prematurely, my own private jeeps WP gave away on sunday afternoon recently coming home from wicklow...no warning and prematurely.....sometime that life.

They are however discounting a repair, cold comfort I know, but thats something.

You'd think they'd give you a good will gesture towards the repair.

However the 3 month warranty suggests they didn't have much faith in the car originally, and want to shift the car rather than gain a customer. Out of curiosity. What did the warranty cover?

ahhhh, the dealer made a mistake in taking on one of them for his stock, a dreadful engine unit I'm afraid to say. Little wonder you've had issues - and probably more to come in the post.
