    HI all,
Im traveling to New York this October and I plan on purchasing the new Macbook air 13-inch : 128GB model. Would there be much of a saving buying it over there compared to buying it here as I have been told there is a different vat system over there and also would customs try to take it off me /charge me ?
    Thanks

NYC sales tax is about 8.5%, and yes, customs will want VAT and Duty from you if they catch you with it.

Very hard for customs to prove.

Leave the box and other items behind and you should be fine.

    Great savings to be made.

Regarding the customs, if I took the macbook out of its packaging and started using it in NYC before returning home, would that make a difference?

Its not up to C&E to prove anything. If they are suspicious, its up to you to prove where you bought it.....

BTW, before this gets shut down, from the charter:
"-No discussion of purchasing illegal goods or products or of illegal purchasing of legitimate products, including evading tax/customs. "

Oh apologies Mods forgot to read the charter! Will not happen again!

No reason for them to be suspicious if you leave all the packaging behind you.

And anyway first you'd have to be searched and unlucky enough for them to be suspicious.

Guys, can we can try and steer clear of the customs dodging-type discussion please? I don't want to be overly strict about this as I know it's discussed freely in other forums, but there's been a few blow ups over this in the past, particularly in relation to the Mac forum, which is why the rule is there.
