    Is the Japanese paper straight forward once you know the basics?

    Check out the HL paper from this year, it'll give you an idea as to the standard. You have to know how to read and write hiragana, katakana and 110 Kanji (there's a list in the syllabus) pretty fluently, and there's a fair amount of grammar in there too. It's not a bad LC subject at all but I wouldn't underestimate it. The oral and listening aspects can be a bit difficult too.
